Portland Aerial Transportation, Inc. (PATI) is a private, nonprofit corporation formed by the initiative of private leaders to ensure the Portland Tram meets the highest standards of architecture and urban design.
Early tram estimates were not based on the tram’s actual design, and did not include project management expenses or design enhancements identified as a priority by neighborhood and city leaders.
The City, as owner of the tram and manager of its construction, is responsible for maintenance of the upper and lower stations and tram tower, which are considered the “civil elements” of the tram system.

The Portland Aerial Tram is a 3,300 linear foot aerial tram rising 500 feet over Interstate 5, the Lair Hill neighborhood, and Terwilliger Parkway and connecting OHSU and the Marquam Hill to the South Waterfront District.
Because the aerial tram is part of the public transportation system and open to the public, planners expect ridership to exceed this estimate.

 PATI - The Design
On February 10, 2004, Angelil/Graham/Pfenninger/Scholl presented to the PATI board its 100-percent schematic designs and budget estimate for the Portland Aerial Tram.
Below are several images from the architect's presentation, as well as a map of the tram's proposed route.
The tram is aligned with SW Gibbs Street on its route from OHSU to the South Waterfront.

 Cabin fever
Two passenger cabins meant for the Portland Aerial Tram have been shipped to Portland from The Netherlands by a Swiss company.
The tram cars, built by Gangloff Switzerland to the specifications of Angélil/Graham/Pfenninger/Scholl Architecture, were shipped from Rotterdam, The Netherlands, on Sept. 6 and are expected to arrive in Portland on Oct. 18.
OHSU spokesman Harry Lenhart said the cabins are meant to evoke the architecture firm's vision of soap bubbles in the sky.

 Media Advisory: Portland Aerial Tram Report
On January 3, 2006, the Portland Development Commission (PDC) contracted with Pinnell/Busch Inc., an engineering consulting firm, to prepare a report on the Portland Aerial Tram.
The consulting team was commissioned to establish the best estimate of the final construction cost of the tram, determine if there are ways to reduce construction costs, expedite the work, and manage risks that could cause the tram construction costs to increase.
On January 30, 2006, City of Portland Mayor Tom Potter released a memo to City Council outlining expectations for addressing tram funding issues.
