Built by authorization of George Washington: Maine’s oldest light, Portland Head, was originally authorized in 1787 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The light did go dark June 27, 1942, so that it wouldn’t serve as a homing marker lest German submarines were operating in the area.
She lived in Seguin Island Light from 1926-30, where she recalled in the first winter, coal supply was exhausted before Spring and she had to dig up the sand by the dock to look for pieces that had fallen when it was delivered in the spring.

Built on the cheap with light rubblestone and lime, Portland Head was a 72 foot tower that first shone its light in January of 1791.
The tower was lowered by 25 feet in 1813; in 1850 a new lantern was installed with a fourth-order fresnel lens; in 1864 twenty feet were added back onto the tower’'s height and the lens upgraded to a second-order.
Portland Head changed little until 1989, when the old fresnel was removed and replaced with an airport-style revolving beacon.

First lighted in January 1791, this 80 foot tall, conical rubblestone tower was the first lighthouse built in Maine.
The light has undergone numerous changes over the years, with the lamp/lens being changed eight times and the height of the tower modified three times.
The light was discontinued in 1942 when all the lighthouse beacons were dimmed for security reasons during World War II, and was never relit until 2002, when the Coast Guard added a solar-powered light.

After forty immigrants on the Bohemian vessel perished the tower was raised twenty feet and a second order Fresnel lens replaced the Fourth Order lens.

Light copper color medium-bodied with a nice dry bite at the finish.
While the nose was indeed floral and very attractive, the beer itself seemed watery and its taste composed almost entirely of hops.
