Willer, the heart patient, used to work for the Coast Guard and now is employed in the medical-records department of the Portland VA. After his first heart attack in January, he was admitted to the VA hospital, treated and eventually discharged.

A Northeast Portland hospital that was the subject of a WW cover story last October suffered a major blow last week after federal officials said it no longer qualifies for reimbursement from Medicare and Medicaid.
The hospital employed as many as 200 people in 2005, but at midday last Saturday, there was not a single car in any of the hospital's parking lots.
The news also poses challenges for the Portland Development Commission, which lent $500,000 at 3 percent interest over five years to the doctors who bought the hospital a little more than a year ago.

Still not sure about hospital birth (due to insurance coverage/lack of cash for midwife)...but it would help to hear from people who gave birth there.
I have not worked with that doctor, but the CNMs are good, but don't have a lot of power within the hospital (which I think says something.) I don't know there epidural rates or c-section rates but I think that they better than St. V's which is a natural birth nightmare.
She had a really nice hospital birth as far as they go...had the birthing ball, her own pace, labored in the tub, and had a foot rest thingy too.

 Restrictions removed from Physicians' Hospital - The Portland Business Journal:
After drawing fire from the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) for patient care deficiencies, Physicians' Hospital has received notification from CMS that the agency removed restrictions on patient admissions and rescinded its threat to pull Medicare reimbursement.
CMS also ended its 23-day termination action on the physician-owned Portland Hospital, according to a March 23 letter from the agency.
Physicians' Hospital, an acute care community hospital in Northeast Portland, was surveyed by CMS in February.
