Portland International Airport (IATA airport code: PDX, ICAO airport code: KPDX) is the largest airport in the U.S. state of Oregon.
In 1925, aviation proponents proposed an airport for Portland on Swan Island, an island northwest of downtown Portland on the Willamette River.
The Port of Portland purchased 256 acres (1.04 km²) and construction began in 1926.

Portland International Jetport (IATA: PWM, ICAO: KPWM) is a public airport located 2 miles (3 km) west of Portland, in Cumberland County, Maine, United States.
What was to become the Portland International Jetport was founded in the late 1920s by Dr. Clifford “Kip” Strange, who needed space for his JN-2 "Jenny" Biplane.
The City of Portland is also planning to make more improvements such as expanding the general aviation ramp, expanding the cargo ramp and facilities, reconfiguration the allignment of taxiways, and eventually the reconfiguration of runway 18/36.

PORTLAND, Maine --Aviation officials on Tuesday planned to introduce new flight patterns and procedures at the Portland International Jetport intended to reduce the roar of planes over many residential neighborhoods.
The new flight patterns and procedures are the result of a three-year noise study, completed this summer, that was prompted by complaints of booms and rumbles created by aircraft during takeoff and landing.
Bourk and Portland Mayor Nathan Smith said noise-reduction options are limited because Federal Aviation Administration standards control the operation of airports.

The most travelers had to wait was 15 minutes for their luggage to be scanned by the machines.
The changes have prompted worries about delays nationwide, but the airport manager in Portland was more worried about the cramped space.

Many years ago when Portland was a lot sleepier and less pretentious than it is now - if you can believe there ever was such a time - it's airport had a name that fit those sleepy and less pretentious times.
They renamed the airport the Portland International Jetport, so folks around the country would know that whatever else we may lack in these parts we now had real jets in Portland and they required a real honest-to-goodness jetports.
