The Oregonian is the major daily newspaper in Portland, Oregon, owned by Advance Publications.
It is the oldest continuously published newspaper in the western United States, founded as a weekly by Thomas J. Dryer on December 4, 1850.
1993 The Oregonian becomes the subject of national coverage due to the fact that it was the Washington Post which broke the story of inappropriate sexual advances which led to the resignation of Oregon senator Bob Packwood.

 The One True b!X's PORTLAND COMMUNIQUE
Over at Metroblogging Portland, Betsy picks up on all of this, including a comment we posted to the dormant PDX Media Watch, in which we asserted that a Greensboro-like experiment likely would never happen out of The Oregonian, mainly due to the difficult wall between the paper and its affiliated (and much-lambasted) website, OregonLive.
As for just what it is The Oregonian has planned (we do know that they recently received a presentation on podcasting from a local blogger), we're as in the dark as anyone else at this stage.
After a literal reduction in the size of the paper its printed on, a round of layoffs last year, a move out of the city it covers, another round of layoffs, and the elimination of its business section, it's somewhat hard to swallow the assertions that all is well.

A Portland doctor plans to file an initiative petition to legalize marijuana for pain control.
Portland internist Rick Bayer said he would file an initiative petition this week that would allow patients suffering from illnesses such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, AIDS and glaucoma to use marijuana to try to relieve their pain.
House Bill 3643 would have raised the penalty for possession of less than 1 ounce from a violation to a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $1,000 and maximum jail time of 30 days.

The Portland Buckaroos would become the greatest franchises to ever play in Portland and arguably the greatest to ever play in the old W.H.L. During their fourteen years in the former Western Hockey League, they would win eight regular season championships and three post season championships.
