Portmarnock (Port Mearnóg in Irish) is a town north of the city of Dublin in the County Fingal (previously North County Dublin), Ireland.
Portmarnock Community School was recently rated the best public post-primary school in the country based on average Leaving Certificate grades, and supplys the needs of the 1,400 students who attend the school from Portmarnock and other nearby towns.
According to the 2002 census, the population of Portmarnock is 8376.

Portmarnock, which is currently undergoing some redesign work, including the reconstruction of the first hole, to bring the estuary more into play, is the traditional home of the Irish Open.
It was here that George Duncan, a British Open champion, lined his body with brown paper to protect himself against the elements during the final round of the inaugural Irish Open in 1927 and overcome a 14-shot deficit to claim the title.
The tournament was played at Portmarnock on 12 occasions between 1976 and 1990, with Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal proving triumphant on the final occasion.

Though originated at the end of the 19th century, golf at Portmarnock has roots that reach back into the mid-1800s when the property’s original landowner, the Jamesons (of Dublin distillery fame), played on a private track next to their home (once situated just south of the present 15th green).
Memberships are difficult to obtain at Portmarnock, and George probably wouldn’t have been able to join were it not for the prescience of a loving family member.

From the standpoint of aesthetics, Portmarnock may give the impression of being the plain Jane of the group -- it lacks the spectacular sand dunes of Ballybunion and has neither the dramatic cliff-top setting of Portrush nor the majestic backdrop of Royal County Down's, Mountains of Mourne.
Many thought Portmarnock should have been the Irish course to host the Ryder Cup in 2004 and it's a great pity, perhaps even an injustice that it isn't.
I highly recommend that you not attempt to tackle Portmarnock's test until later in your trip, after the opportunity to prepare on a few challenges that are somewhat more lenient.
