Portobello is a beach resort 3 miles (5 km) to the east of Edinburgh city centre along the coast of the Firth of Forth from Leith, in Scotland.
By 1801 Portobello Sands were being used for drill practice by the Edinburgh Light Horse.
Portobello gave its name to the town of Portobello in New Zealand, which lies close to the city of Dunedin (itself named for Edinburgh).

So it saddens me that nearly ten years on, a new Portobello High still hasn't been built and we are in the middle of a huge wrangle about where it should be relocated.
Portobello was a great school - and I'm sure it still is - but its staff and pupils are let down by the terrible state of the building.
It would be a shame if two new schools were built as replacements, as the great strength of Portobello is that because of its wide catchment area, it is one of the few schools in Edinburgh's that can truthfully call itself a comprehensive.

Although we cannot be sure of the identity of the sailor who built Portobello House we do know that a few years after the rebellion of 1745 the house was occupied by George Hamilton.
In the late 1780s William Jameson (sometimes referred to as the "Father of Portobello") built a harbour close to the mouth of the Figgate Burn.
In the late 1790s Portobello beach was provided with bathing machines which were used by the well-to-do in Edinburgh during the summer months.

Friends of the Earth today (Thursday 26 May) welcomed the victory for Portobello community groups who have been opposing a supermarket planning application [1].
The application by Duddingston House Properties to build an 80,000ft superstore at one end of the high street was refused after a public local inquiry.
It is relatively level, but with a slight slope upwards from about 10 metres AOD on Portobello High Street (east) to about 15 metres AOD in Baileyfield Road (west).

The video, which was funded by a £4700 council grant, received its premiere in Portobello town hall yesterday in front of an audience which included many of the pensioners who contributed their memories to the project.
"Portobello was and still is one of the proudest communities in the Edinburgh area and we felt that it was a good idea to preserve its rich history on film for future generations to learn from and appreciate."

THE shortlist for potential sites for the new Portobello High School and St John's Primary has been extended after plans to build on parkland were met with opposition.
The concession by the council, which had named Portobello Park, Jewel Park, Cavalry Park and Holyrood Park as possible locations, is a small victory for environmental campaigners against losing green space.
But the council would have to raise capital to buy such a large site, and it is understood it would prefer to use it for an expansion of the proposed nearby Waterfront development in the future.
