Topic: Portolan

In the News (Wed 15 Feb 12)

 [No title]
It was the spread of the compass that assisted the creation of the portolan as a new type of nautical chart in the 13th century, and it was the growing role of improved instruments of celestial navigation, coupled with the different demands of the rapidly expanding oceanic voyages, that made it obsolete several centuries later.
This did not happen overnight, for the portolan chart was used in the Atlantic in the 15 th century and spread over the world's oceans in the 16th, 6th, being the type adopted and given a new dimension by the earliest discoverers themselves, with the Portuguese far in the vanguard.
In contrast to portolan texts, those of the isolarii focused on the topical and historical aspects of a given island and paid only marginal attention to navigational matters, for their purpose was not to help the mariner but to amuse and instruct the curious reader.

Portolan charts were practical tools made for the use of sailors who sailed "great waters." As Tony Campbell, Map Librarian of the British Map Library put it so well: "The medieval mappaemundi (world maps in the Christian tradition) are the cosmographies of thinking landsmen.
Along the edge of the portolan charts are often holes which could be used to attach the chart to a wooden roller, around which the chart was to be wrapped, then tied with a thong for carrying, probably in a protective container, on board ship.
Directions are indicated on the portolan charts by this network of lines joined on the points dividing the circle that is a basic element of the portolan chart.

During the Middle Ages, this kind of knowledge was written down in texts known as portolans (not to be confused with portolan charts, or maps).
It consists of portolans for coasts from Venice to Constantinople and Tana, for the coast of the Adriatic, and for the coasts and islands from Greece to Cyprus.
These portolans were written by someone other than Michael, as the different penmanship, ink, and pagination makes evident, after Michael's death, although there is no way to determine exactly when.

Portolan Charts Intro - Bell Library: Maps and Mapmakers
For starters, the word "portolan" derives from the word "portolani" which is translated into English as "pilots" or as "rutters." These texts list places, with distances and directions to reach them.
The "chart" element of "portolan chart" makes it clear that what is being referred to is a map complete in itself, not a map illuminating a text.
On portolan charts prior to 1500, distance, direction, and coastal features were provided for navigators, with information to enable them to calculate and measure the progress and direction of their vessels during a voyage; mariners still had to rely on experience and common sense, however.

If this condition is satisfied, in the context of optimality, it means that the relevant test-projection assigned to the old map is most probably the ‘masked’ projection used by the mapmaker, empirically, intuitively or even unconsciously in the case of copying from older maps.
The optimal fitting of all portolan maps to the adopted test projection is obviously of ‘global’ character.

The detailed outlines of the coast—and the magnetic rhumb lines that cover the entire map—are characteristic of the portolan sea charts used by sailors since the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
But unlike more narrowly focused portolan charts, this map also exhibits elements of the mappaemundi, such as information about inland geopolitics that was of no immediate use to the sailor.
The merging of the concern for detailed accuracy derived from the portolan charts and the more iconic nature of the mappaemundi exemplify the dynamic relationship between changing views of the world and the mutable conventions of representation.
