Jaco’s story ended in tragedy, however; he began to suffer from mental illness, which, had it been successully treated, would likely have been diagnosed as a bipolar affective disorder.
Herbie Hancock perceived Jaco as a revolutionary right from the beginning, and it was his liner notes on Jaco's solo debut that first made note of his singular talent.

Pat Metheny spoke of Jaco’s musicality in the most glowing terms, and alluded to his sad decline due to what his daughter describes in the liner notes as manic depression.
In the early 90's I bought a badly-recorded CD of Jaco playing live sometime in the mid-80's and was disappointed.
A couple of my favorite moments: Jaco talking, in 1974, to Bob Bobbing, the creator of the collection, playing chords made up entirely of harmonics, telling him what each chord is. Bob asks if he can play a particular scale using only harmonics, and without hesitation Jaco fires off the scale.

She emphasizes that Jaco was killed by a violent man that beat him to death, not by his illness or his manic behavior.
One can't help but think that even a few years later with progress in the treatment of manic depressive disease and a better understanding of the chemcial imbalances that cause it, Jaco might have received the treatment he needed and returned to a full, creative life.

I have an infinite amount of gratitude for Jaco and his music as in my opinion, he was a genius and creator of music beyond the scope of what anyone was trying to do.
I have yet to discover more about J.P. I'm sure "Portrait of Jaco" will cover some of the empty spaces in anyone's knowledge of J.P. I recently listened to a recording of Jaco with Al DiMeola, and once again it was a pleasant suprise.
Jaco Pastorius was, is, and always will be a continued inspiration to me. Truly the "Worlds greatest bass player".

Yeah Jaco rules my other favorite being Phil Lesh of The Grateful Dead both have totolly unique styles (although everone ties to sound like Jaco now with the artificial harmonics and all) and were inovators.
Jaco played on many of their albums, he was great.
Jaco was nearby and helped get my bud and his friend in but they wouldn't let Jaco in.

While this project is well done (but not sensibly produced), I think anyone who knows their Jaco history well enough (or is interested in just the music) will be disappointed.
The problem with these discs is that many of the interviews are given overtop of those precious recordings that are so hard to find, instead of being their own individual tracks.
There are recordings on here of Jaco in his early years, playing drums, starting out on bass, and even the explaination of...

Unbeknownst to himself, the guy that put this thing together did the world a great service by recording Jaco throughout the early years and that alone guarantees him a place in the history of Jaco's story.

As a testimonial to Jaco's mind-numbing talent, there are no substandard performances the listener has to sit through.
The first CD features Jaco with Bireli Lagrene and Peter Lubke (this is the last real band he worked with before his death) basically jamming in a studio situation.
The second CD is a bunch of takes of a new tune that Jaco had written for his then-girlfriend called Theresa which is a nice little waltz in the style of 3 Views of a Secret.

Jaco i'm pretty surprised you mention him, Jaco is the man who changed the concept of bass.
I never understand why I didn't show interest years ago, although I think I know the answer; there are many different Jazz styles and I only heard the ones I didn't like.
It's such a shame Jaco was such a f*** up, in his persoal life, and it eventually killed him.

Holiday Park Records has released a two-CD set called "Portrait of Jaco --The Early Years." It traces his development from his musical beginnings through 1976, when he made his solo debut on Epic Records.
"These were Jaco's 'Garden of Eden' years in Florida when he was healthy, happy, making music and enjoying life, and you can hear that positive attitude throughout these recordings," said teenage friend Bob Bobbing, who drew much of the music from his collection of raw, live recordings.
Grammy-winning artists Pat Metheny, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock and Joni Mitchell added some of their own early recordings with the early Jaco plus interviews about their collaborations and relationships.
