Portsea is a popular, but rather exclusive, seaside holiday resort of some 550 people located 6 metres above sea-level and 93 km south of Melbourne.
Although Portsea faces northwards onto the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay the peninsula is so thin at this point that the residential area almost reaches to the southern side of the promontory which faces Bass Strait.
Portsea Back Beach is popular with swimmers and surfers, although the waters can be rough and dangerous (i.e., swim between the flags).

The arrival of the ‘Ticonderoga’ at the Port Philip Heads on 3 rd November 1852, with nearly 300 sick passengers and crew on board, a 100 had already died from fever on the voyage this necessitated the opening of the Quarantine Station at Point Nepean.
The name ‘Portsea Quarantine Station’ was introduced when the Commonwealth took control of quarantine throughout Australia in 1910.
The buildings of the early Portsea Station form, probably, the oldest extant institutional complex in Victoria, with examples of several methods of construction and styles.

The workhouse doctor ordered the food for the sick while people over 60 were allowed 1oz of tea, 7oz of butter and 8oz of sugar a week instead of gruel for breakfast.
Evidence suggests that that in 1846 the sick, lunatic and infirm in Portsea Workhouse were being given a better diet than many other paupers of the same group in other workhouses.

After a trip back to Melbourne to deal with a client's emergency, we arrived back in Portsea to continue our holiday.
As the name suggests, Portsea Hole is a hole about 75m wide, with depths ranging from 14m to 27m.
Once the safety-stop countdown begins, moving out of a depth of 3-6m will cause it to reset, and as we momentarily dropped below 6m on our first stop, we were required to do it all over again.
