Portsea is a popular, but rather exclusive, seaside holiday resort of some 550 people located 6 metres above sea-level and 93 km south of Melbourne.
Although Portsea faces northwards onto the calm waters of Port Phillip Bay the peninsula is so thin at this point that the residential area almost reaches to the southern side of the promontory which faces Bass Strait.
Portsea Back Beach is popular with swimmers and surfers, although the waters can be rough and dangerous (i.e., swim between the flags).

Beneath the cliffs at Portsea where luxury holiday homes command enviable views of Port Phillip Bay is a bathing box that is, in heritage terms at least, equally as impressive.
Portsea stands at the tip of the Mornington Peninsula and it was this area which saw much of the State's lime burning activity.
Although the Portsea lime kiln's conversion occurred well before heritage legislation came into being it remains an excellent example of how buildings can be given a new lease of life without detracting from their cultural heritage significance.

Harold_Holt, a former Prime_Minister_of_Australia, disappeared while swimming at Cheviot_Beach near Portsea on 17_December 1967 and was officially presumed dead two days later, although a formal inquest into his death did not take place until 2005.

The parish of Portsea expanded greatly in the 1800's, and the second church was demolished and a new, much larger one was built in 1889.
It appears that George and Ellen moved around a lot in the Portsea area after their marriage, since on each of their children's birth records a different address was shown.
George James Hyde Graves (12) was born 14 May 1879 in Portsea, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, and died in the U.S. He married Ella Purdy, apparently in England, and had 3 sons and a daughter.

The specimen was one of two found in close proximity on the bottom at a depth of 4.5m.

At the time when he was awarded the Victoria Cross he was serving in Kontum province near the Laotian border, as commander of a Mobile Strikes Force.

The family was found at 90 Church Path, Portsea and the entry contained some interesting information.
In essence, therefore, in the early 1860s two families were living in the same area of Portsea; William and Rachel Gates, with their 5 children, and George and Sarah Howe, with their 4 children.
Rachel Gates was widowed whilst in her early thirties with two very young children and, 6 years later, George Howe found himself in the same position.

Harold Holt disappeared while swimming at Cheviot Beach near Portsea, Victoria on 17 December, 1967.
Without determining the cause of Holt's death, a joint report by Commonwealth and Victoria Police, submitted in January 1968, concluded that, '… there has been no indication that the disappearance of the late Mr Holt was anything other than accidental'.
The report (see copy on file A1209, 1968/8063) found that his last movements followed a routine domestic pattern, his demeanour had been normal and despite his knowledge of the beach, the turbulent conditions (high winds, rough seas and rip tides) overcame him.

Following the 1966 election Prime Minister Harold Holt found himself faced with a hostile Senate.
Holt’s term of office as Prime Minister was shortlived: a keen spear fisherman, he disappeared on December 17, 1967, while swimming at a favourite spot off the coast at Portsea, Victoria.
Unknown to Frith at the time, this was to be one of the last cartoons in which Holt would feature before his tragic death.
