  History of Portsmouth Cathedral
Portsmouth Cathedral has a unique and dramatic history reflecting its close association with the sea.
From humble beginnings, this chapel was to become in turn a parish church in the 14th century and a cathedral in the 20th century.
In 1194 Richard seized Portsmouth from de Gisors as punishment for the latter having sided with Prince John while Richard was held in captivity after the Third Crusade, and the King claimed Portsmouth for the Crown.

The sheltered Portsmouth Harbour lies to the west of the island and the large tidal bay of Langstone Harbour is to the east.
Portsmouth is almost unique among British cities in having two cathedrals; the Anglican Cathedral of St Thomas, in Old Portsmouth, and the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St John the Evangelist, in Edinburgh Road, Portsea.

Made a cathedral in 1927, and a parish church` in 1320, before which it was a chapel to the island's parish church of St Mary.
So the church was something special, a testimonial of piety, a chapel for the needs of a growing port (and those who passed through it), and, in the event, a showpiece for a fairly powerful monastery.
It was not particularly big but, in many respects, it had more of the character of a miniature cathedral or monastic church than of a medium-sized parochial church.

We are situated in the heart of the City of Portsmouth.
The Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Diocese of Portsmouth which was formed in 1882 and our present Bishop is Bishop Crispian Hollis who lives on the Cathedral site.
Although he spends much of his time visiting the parishes of the Diocese, he is very much a part of the Cathedral life and well-known to Cathedral parishioners.

Last year's pin-ups raised £3,000 for the EC Roberts Centre in Portsmouth, which supports families living in temporary or unsuitable housing, Macmillan Cancer Relief and the Portsmouth Cathedral Choir.

The artist will be carving a special figure for Portsmouth Cathedral during the week of 28 May, visitors are welcome to watch him working in the Cathedral.
The Odyssey figures began being carved in the village of Dominikowice in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in South East Poland.
Some of the figures were made from lime trees that grew on her farm and were a silent witness to her childhood experiences.

This is beyond the means of the Cathedral parish situated in a partly depopulated and (with respect) not over-affluent part of Portsmouth.
With regard to (b) as a former Cathedral priest I can say that life in Bishop's House if not poverty stricken, was certainly reasonably frugal and we did not spend all the time swilling gin.

The heyday of the picture postcard was that short period between the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 and the outbreak of war in 1914.
There were already numerous visitors to Portsmouth & Southsea, and, to judge by the postcards, favourite spots included the seafront at Southsea, Victoria Park, Commercial Road and the Guildhall, but this selection includes pictures from many parts of the modern city.
Most of the postcards were sent through the post and the messages, stamps and postmarks of almost 100 years ago are also reproduced on this CD-ROM.
