The School Standards and Framework Act 1998 and the Education (Grammar School Ballots) Regulations 1998 set out the framework under which parental ballots on grammar school admissions may be held, and the arrangements for governing bodies to publish statutory proposals to remove selection.
Grammar schools are grouped in some areas for the purposes of petitions and ballots.
Parents of pupils of compulsory school age either living in the area or sending their child to an LEA maintained school will be eligible to petition or vote.

Sixth form students at Portsmouth Grammar School heard this week about a new vision for the educational system presented by local Transcendental Meditation teacher and Natural Law Party prospective candidate for Portsmouth South, William Treend.
He added that research on the use of Transcendental Meditation in schools and colleges has shown that the development of higher states of consciousness in students results in consistent improvements in both I.Q. and moral reasoning scores.

Andrew McBirnie was born in Portsmouth in 1971.
Between 1997 and 2002 he taught in schools across the primary and secondary age ranges, firstly at Longridge Towers School in Berwick-upon-Tweed, and then at The Oratory School, Reading, where he was Director of Music from 1999 to 2002.
