 Information about Portsmouth Historic Dockyard
The construction of Portsmouth Royal Dockyard in Hampshire and on the South coast of England, was ordered by King Richard I in 1194 when he also presented the town with its first charter.
In 1206 King John ordered the dockyard to be enclosed “by a good and strong wall” and, in 1495, Henry VII had Sir Reginald Bray design the worlds first dry dock, which was constructed in the dockyard.
For anyone who wishes to understand English naval tradition and history, a visit to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard is inevitable.
