On September 18, 1982, the USS Portsmouth was launched at the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, Connecticut.
It was a war-vintage pile of junk that was nevertheless preferable to the noisy, grimy atmosphere that permeated the Portsmouth.
Technically Portsmouth, Virginia, was also a namesake city and the boat did pay a port-call there, but the southern namesake never displayed the same enthusiasm as the northern namesake did.

The first PORTSMOUTH was a small warship built for the new United States Navy in 1798 by James K. Hackett, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with funds contributed by the citizens of Portsmouth.
PORTSMOUTH sailed on 25 January 1845 for the Mexican coast, where she was engaged in monitoring the movements of British vessel.

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (NNS) -- USS Portsmouth (SSN 707) honored its namesake city in Virginia at a city council meeting Nov. 23 to celebrate the submarine's arrival at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, Va., following the submarine's inactivation from service in September after 21 years of service.
The presentation was the latest event in a long-standing relationship between Portsmouth and her namesake cities in Virginia and New Hampshire.
Portsmouth is a Los Angeles-class submarine, with a length of 360 feet, measuring 33 feet across the beam and displacing 6,000 tons.
