This Portuguese possession, bounded E. by the Indian Ocean, N. by German East Africa, W. by the Nyasaland Protectorate, Rhodesia and the Transvaal, S. by Tongaland (Natal), has an area of 293,500 sq.
- Portuguese East Africa is sparsely inhabited, the estimated population (1909) being 3,120,000; 90% of the inhabitants belong to various Bantu tribes, from whose ranks most of the natives employed in the Transvaal gold mines are recruited.
In 1752 the government of the East African possessions was again separated from that of Goa, and twenty years later Francisco Jose Maria de Lacerda e Almeida, a man of high attainments, made governor of the province at his own request, endeavoured to reform the administration.

Portuguese East Africa consists of the Province of Mozambique.
The province is served by a number of fine harbours, including Lourenço Marques, the best in south-east Africa, which is connected with the Transvaal by a railway, Beira, the outlet for the produce of the Mashona gold fields and joined to them by rail, Inhambane, Chinde, Quilimane, Ibo, and Mozambique.
A force of 2730 men of the first line form the colonial army and the policing of the rivers and harbours is done by flotillas of gunboats.

 Portuguese East Africa Information
Portuguese East Africa is the name formerly applied to a string of Portuguese overseas colonies along the south-east African coast, which now form the state of Mozambique.
Portuguese trading settlements and, later, colonies were formed along the coast from 1498, when Vasco da Gama first reached the Mozambican coast.
Some of these colonies were handed over in the late nineteenth century for rule by chartered companies such as the Companhia de Moçambique.
