The Portuguese legislative election of 1976 took place on April 25, exactly one year after the previous election, and two years after the Carnation Revolution.
With a new Constitution approved, the country's main aim was the economical recovery and the strenghten of the democratic conquests.
The election was won again by the Socialist Party and Mário Soares, its leader, became the Prime-Minister of the 1st Constitutional government in July 23.

In 1976, after the approval of the Constitution, the second democratic election was carried out and the Party raised its share of the vote to 14.56% and 40 MPs.
The election was won by a right-wing coalition, led by Sá Carneiro, which immediately started a policy that the Party considered to be contrary to working-class interests.

The Portuguese legislative election of 2005 took place on February 20.
These elections were called after the decision of President Jorge Sampaio on November 30, 2004 to dissolve the Parliament as an answer to the political instability caused by the government led by Pedro Santana Lopes (PSD) in coalition with the PP.
Santana Lopes had become Prime-Minister after Durão Barroso left the country in order to become President of the European Commission in a decision that divided the country, because many Portuguese were expecting that the Socialist President Jorge Sampaio would dissolve parliament and call a legislative election.

Portugal's April 25, 1976 constitution reflected the country's 1974-76 move from authoritarian rule to provisional military government to a parliamentary democracy with some initial communist and left-wing influence.
The 1976 constitution, which defined Portugal as a "Republic...engaged in the formation of a classless society," was revised in 1982, 1989, 1992, and 1997.
Presidential powers include appointing the prime minister and Council of Ministers, in which the president must be guided by the assembly election results; dismissing the prime minister; dissolving the assembly to call early elections; vetoing legislation, which may be overridden by the assembly; and declaring a state of war or siege.

The election of José Batlle y Ordóñez to the presidency in 1903 caused the Blancos to fear the agreement would be discarded because the Colorado Party now held a large majority of votes.
The military stipulated that the opposition parties had to agree to exclude banned politicians from the elections, and they also had to promise that the military would be immune from prosecution for abuses against political dissidents.

I think the marvellous thing about elections is that the population of the province has an opportunity to examine the record of the incumbent government, in this case the Harris-Eves government.
What we're proposing here and what needs to be done and what is going to be done after the next election, should we be successful, is we're going to create a greater Toronto transportation authority to integrate the transportation system so that one can move seamlessly through the system without the chaos which now exists.
I have to say that I rarely agree with the NDP speakers but the member for Beaches-East York, who was a former councillor and a former mayor, when he says that he can't support this resolution, it's clear that we can't support this resolution because it doesn't do enough.

There would then be a full-blooded election campaign and the candidates would be supported in their resources, both financial and policy, by their respective parties.
It states, "The legislative power of the Commonwealth shall be vested in a Federal Parliament which shall consist of a President, a Senate and a House of Representatives." In other words substituting the word "President" for the words "Queen" or "Governor-General" follows automatically every other change.
It would be pointless for direct election purists to claim that a majority no vote was a result of their intervention to get what they see as a more democratic version of a republic later.
