		Though Claudius, in the inscription which he caused to be erected in A.D. 46, boasted that he had freed the city of Rome from the danger of inundation, his work was only partially successful.
		It was probably Claudius who constructed hither the direct road from Rome, the Via Portuensis (15 m.) which ran over the hills as far as the modern Ponte Galera, and then straight across the plain.

	Millions of Portus investors' money went offshore: report
		Nearly $250 million which investors put into the Portus hedge fund was sent to a Caribbean tax haven, a newspaper says, citing court documents.
		KPMG is the court-appointed receiver for Portus Alternative Asset Management, a fund which raised $730 million from 26,000 Canadian investors before regulators began questioning it earlier this year.

		I visited the remains of the fort at Portus Lemanis in the high summer of 2004; it was hot and sticky as I struggled through a disused path of brambles and nettles on a slippery hillside (image 1) beneath the mediaeval castle to get close for a couple of images.

		With the conquest of Egypt, another large supplier of crops, and the increased population of Rome, Emperor Augustus considered the creation of an artificial port near Rome because Ostia was affected by silting caused by winter floods.
		Augustus' plan was implemented by Claudius and completed by Nero in 54 A.D.: the new port (called Portus Augusti) was located a few miles north of Ostia and linked to the Tiber by an artificial channel, thus creating an island (Isola Sacra) between the two branches of the Tiber and the sea.
