The Village of Portville is within the south part of the Town of Portville and southeast of Olean, New York.
The Village of Portville was incorporated in 1895.
In the village the population was spread out with 29.7% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older.

 Cattaraugus County, New York - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This was an enormous county, including the northern part of New York State as well as all of the present State of Vermont and, in theory, extending westward to the Pacific Ocean.
The southern part of Cattaraugus County is the only area of western New York that was not covered by the last ice age glaciation and is noticeably more rugged than neighboring areas that had peaks rounded and valleys fille by the glacier.
Because Cattaraugus County is on the south border of New York, it borders Warren and McKean Counties in Pennsylvania.

I rolled through Mayville, "Best Water in New York State-1996" (which must be like being Citizen of the Year in Bayonne, NJ as there isn't a lot of competition) and then rode for over 26 miles along the shore of Lake Chautauqua.
Summer has finally arrived in New York, as today temperatures were well into the nineties and the humidity had to match the temperature.

On a map dated 1829, the village now known as Portville is labeled "Riceville," presumably named after the resident who built the oldest home in the village, which still stands today.
The Town of Portville was formed from the Town of Olean in 1837.
Because of his skill with writing and bookkeeping, he was given a job in the prison office, where he was able to obtain information which was used, after the War, at the trial of the camp commander, Capt. Wirz.

After the New York and Erie railroad was built the mail route was divided, one stage running from Ceres to Olean daily and one from Ceres to Friendship 3 times a week until 1869 or 70 after which it went daily.
When a new family came they were taken in by some family already housed, until their own could be built.
