 UGO.com Film/TV - Set Visit - Poseidon
Though many give Airport (1970) the distinction of launching the modern disaster film, it was Poseidon's groundbreaking level of destruction and A-list pathos, not to mention its unprecedented gross of 100 million dollars at the box office, that set the modern disaster motif in motion.
Of course, any film relying so heavily on special effects isn't going to stand the test of time very well, and the original Poseidon is no exception.
In the case of Poseidon, Warner Brothers seems to be safely covering their bets by placing veteran director Wolfgang Petersen at the helm.

Poseidon is the definition of a Hollywood blockbuster.
The introduction to the characters and the pre-sinking segment of the film is so inane and forgettable that you'll start to find yourself praying for the wave to come.
If its audience were as stupid as it seems to think they are then they might as well have just re-released the original and pretended it was a remake.

Poseidon plays with our fears of confinement, of fire, of drowning and of relinquishing control and having to rely on the decisions of others.
Poseidon maintains your interest and involvement and does not follow the usual 'disaster movie' formula.
It is a very good, entertaining film with spectacular effects which with a tighter script might have been a great one.

Urban Legends Reference Page: Lost Legends (Film at Eleven)
The short flip card films viewed on customer-cranked Kinetoscopes and Mutoscopes in nickelodeons had given way to more elaborate films that were projected onto screens for audiences in movie theaters.
These films were short (generally no more than one reel in length), and of course they were both silent and fl-and-white, but they had already captured the imagination of a population eager for new forms of entertainment.
The film industry had not quite shed the somewhat seedy image it had acquired in the days of the nickelodeon, however, which is one of the reasons why this detail of the Titanic story has received relatively little attention.

CANOE -- JAM! Video: 'Poseidon' spawned disaster film genre
After it became a mega-hit, The Poseidon Adventure became the prototype of a new wave of disaster movies that inevitably led to Titanic in 1997.
Three of these "classics" of the genre, led by The Poseidon Adventure, are fresh on handsome widescreen DVD to coincide with Wolfgang Petersen's Poseidon.
Don't forget, however, they all were nominated for Oscars: The Poseidon Adventure got eight nominations, winning once plus a special tech Oscar for visual effects; The Towering Inferno also got eight noms, winning three times; Earthquake was nominated four times, winning once and getting the special visual effects Oscar.

The success of this film is in the vein of other all-star disaster films in the seventies such as Airport (1970) and its sequels, The Towering Inferno (1974), and Earthquake (1974).
