The term posh is used particularly in Britain to describe those with social pretensions.
The fact that this folk etymology is only recorded 17 years after the terms earliest known appearance (in the 25th September 1918 issue of Punch) also lends weight to the theory that this etymology is merely apocryphal.

Posh - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An on-going modern redefinition of "posh" was revealed in the television series "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous." Part of the wide appeal of the reality series The Osbournes was the contrast between blissfully unchanged and unpretentious rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his posh surroundings.
In British English, people can be posh as well (although not "a posh" as in the original usage), by which it is meant that they are extremely wealthy.
POSH can also be a four letter acronym, abbreviating "Parent Over Shoulder." However this is a very rarely used internet slang term.

Posh was brought to the vet (dr daphne ang of the animal clinic, clementi) on 23/9/02 (Mon) for significant loss of weight and bad diarrhea.

Monday, June 09, 2003 3:22 PM Posh went through an emergency surgery on Friday as he was not eating and we were afraid that the lump on his stomach might be the cause of it.

Guardian Unlimited | Guardian daily comment | The tosh about Posh
The contradictory double-use of that "posh" word - coupled with the unspoken poshness, yet infamous lack of discretion and dignity, of the correspondent herself - serve to underline the unreadable mutability of this language.
When the news broke, there were two possible culprits: it was either Posh's fault, for being too thin and failing to follow her husband when he moved to Madrid; or it was Rebecca Loos's fault for being a slapper.
Posh's handle has infuriated pundits since it was first bestowed upon her, when she was still in a band, and the others became Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Baby.

The theory is that "posh" comes from the days of ocean travel between England and India.
Such preferred arrangements were said to be "port (left side) out, starboard (right side) home," neatly summed up in the acronym "posh." It's a lovely theory -- too bad there's not a shred of evidence in its favor, and a good deal of evidence against it.
"Posh" is an actual word in Romany, the language of the Gypsies, meaning "half." Evidently the word originally entered the argot of England's underworld in the 17th century in such compounds as "posh-houri," meaning "half-pence," and soon became a slang term for money in general.

 posh - Wiktionary
Unknown; popularly (but falsely) believed to be an acronym for "port out, starboard home", describing the cabins given to upper-class passengers travelling with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company from Britain to India and back.
A more likely origin is the Romany word posh meaning "half-", as in posh-kooroona meaning "half a crown" - a once-substantial some of money, and hence by association anything pricey or upper-class.
Alternatively posh may have first become a general term for money, after posh-houri, half-penny.

This paper presents POSH, which is an extension module to Python that attempts to address the problems associated with the GIL by enabling placement of Python objects in shared memory.
In particular, POSH allows multiple processes to share objects in much the same way that threads do with standard Python objects.
We have found that the use of POSH allows some applications to be structured as if they used threads, but without the GIL bottleneck.
