Stills’ song here that most sounds like his later band is the excellent “Rock & Roll Woman,” while “Bluebird” is also one of his best efforts ever, being another intense rocker with pretty harmonies and guitars all over the place - that is until an unexpected banjo interlude takes the song to its conclusion.
Throughout this short album the band veers from style to style, and though they don’t all work equally well this was an impressive album that's generally regarded as the band’s best.
With Young leaving and rejoining the band continually and bassist Bruce Palmer getting deported on a regular basis, the band would implode soon after the release of Buffalo Springfield Again after a volatile two years together; Last Time Around was released posthumously.

Contrary to reputation, a careful listen dismisses the notion that the two bands sound overly alike, beyond a shared desire to mix hard rock with poppier styles, harmonies, and a love of The Beatles.

 Possessed - Death Metal
Foundational death metal band Possessed wrought symphonies of evil triumph out of crude metal and primitive hardcore, bringing into being much of death metal as we know it today.
Built of the elemental rhythmic violence of thrash bands hybridized into the longer song structures of heavy metal bands and the progressive avant garde, infused with the layerings of melody and dissonance appreciated only in fl metal bands at that time, the music of Possessed comes fully formed with internal conflicts for authenticity.
Uber-phrase percussion emulates the machine mockingly, applying intervals and textures alongside chordal variations to transition both linear sections and the whole of each song, where it is conveniently freed to trace the veings of a greater structure than to be tied to the looping chorus of the end of each phrase.

 Velvet Underground Album Reviews
Since so many bands have taken their cue from the Velvet blueprint over the years, it’s easy to forget how startlingly original their confrontational music was during the Summer Of Love.
Initially despised but now revered by both musicians and critics, the band possessed the vision and guts to go against the grain, with John Cale’s skewed viola cries lending an otherworldly ambiance to tracks like the sadomachoistic “Venus In Furs” and the elongated classic “Heroin,” where gutter poet Lou Reed vividly talk-sings about shooting up.
After all, this is a band who originally made their name based on their confrontational sound and a truly combustible chemistry, and this band bears little resemblance to that groundbreaking unit.
