Possum was checking the route for the Queenstown hill climb, an annual event over a fourteen km mountain stage, when the accident occurred.
He was born Peter Bourne in a place called Pukekohe, South Auckland NZ on the 13 of April 1956.the name “Possum” came at the age of 15 when he swerved to avoid a possum, hit a bank, rolled and wrote off his first car.

Possum Bourne held a favoured place in the fabric of Caloundra City and its residents and the unveiling of a plaque in his memory at Kings Beach Park last Friday evening indicates the high regard in which he was held.
