Tommy Flowers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flowers was born in London and, after an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering, he earned a degree in Electrical engineering at the University of London before joining the telecommunications branch of the General Post Office (GPO) in 1926, moving to work at their research station at Dollis Hill in 1930.
After the war, Flowers returned to the Post Office Research Station where he was Head of the Switching Division.
During the War, Flowers was asked to join the codebreaking efforts at Bletchley Park, and it was he who proposed solving the problems of the Heath Robinson machine by using an electronic system using valves.

 HOT AIR: Postal Experiments
Upon pickup at the station, the clerk and supervisor consulted a book of postage regulations together for 2 minutes and 40 seconds before deciding on additional postage fee to assess.
The ski was slipped into a bin of postage that was being loaded into a truck behind a station (a collaborating staff member created a verbal disturbance up the street to momentarily distract postal workersÕ attention).
Our research staff began the project by obtaining and reviewing relevant information on USPS regulations and discussing, in a limited and very hypothetical manner, the planned project with USPS 800 number personnel.

History of the United States Post Office
The Post Office Department of the Confederate States of America was established on February 21, 1861, by an Act of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States.
The customer had to take a letter to the post office to mail it, and the addressee had to pick up the letter at the post office, Unless he or she lived in one of about 40 big cities where a carrier would deliver it to the home address for an extra penny or two.
Although funds were appropriated a month before he left office in 1893, subsequent Postmasters general dragged their feet on inaugurating the new service so that it was 1896 before the first experimental rural delivery routes began in West Virginia, with carriers working out of post offices in Charlestown, Halltown, and Uvilla.

 75 Degrees South
It will be the sixth research station built on the Brunt Ice Shelf and is designed to replace the current base.
Once the new station is up and running, Halley V will be completely dismantled in order to comply with the strict environmental rules of the Antarctic Treaty.
By combining the science platforms and summer accommodation with the main living area the station is more compact and should make it a more sociable place in the summer.

Project for Public Spaces (PPS) Great Park Places: Post Office Square
The development of the Park at Post Office Square began in the early 1980s‚ when the real-estate market was booming in downtown Boston and development space was at a premium.
Friends of Post Office Square consulted with the Parks Department and the Boston Greenspace Alliance, a consortium of open-space advocates, and decided to build a parking structure underground with a park above it.
Along with the right to a monthly parking space, the purchase arrangement with Friends of Post Office Square included a cumulative 8% dividend to be paid to shareholders when debt relief is complete.

Post Office Research Station, Brook Road, Dollis Hill, London, UK
This is a critical step in a research programme aimed at automatically finding suitable systems of features for recognizing hand-printed and cursively written characters.
In a simplified problem, it is found that appropriate pairs of parts are chosen automatically when a purely algebraic technique is used for inferring the similarities of unknown to known patterns.

Tommy Flowers; Unsung Hero - Humble Beginnings
He obtained his degree in Electronic Engineering, and went to work for the Post Office (then in charge of telecommunications as well).
It didn't take Flowers long to notice that the endless combinations involved in these codes called for a switching system very similar to what he had been working on with the Post Office.
He was, however, a respected electronic engineer, and when war broke out he was drafted in to Bletchley to help out, as the academics led by Turing first roughed out plans for a "computer".

Real Estate Weekly: A new Penn Station in an old post office
The building -- undoubtedly the most high-profile post office in the United States, open 24-7, 365 days a year, was originally built in 1914 (just four years after the original Penn Station).
Unlike the current Penn Station that is dominated by fast food joints and other low-end amenities, the new space will allow a variety of retailers to take advantage of the lucrative station in an arrangement similar to Grand Central Terminal.
The demolition of Penn Station in 1965 -- "the great act of vandalism in the history of the city," according to Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan -- was a low point for preservation in this city.

Optoelectronics Research Centre :: The Optical Fibre Group at Southampton, 1966-1988
Experimental work was not to begin for another year because the contract supporting the research, whilst agreed in principle in early 1966, was not to provide any hard cash until January 1968, and the author was on sabbatical leave in the USA during the academic year 1966/67.
He said he was in charge of optical communications research at the time and his materials experts had informed him that it would not be possible to reduce material losses to the level required for long-distance transmission.
Whilst this research was underway consideration was given to the very necessary question of what kind of transmission path might be suitable at optical frequencies.

Subterranea Britannica: Research Study Group: Sites: Dollis Hill
DOLLIS HILL The Research Station In 1914 the first steps were taken towards establishing a research branch of the Post Office's Engineering Department on the crest of the Dollis Hill ridge; and the first workshops were set up here in 1921.
Following closure of Post Office Research Station, in the mid 1990's the site was sold to a property developer who converted the Research Station into luxury flats with a new housing estate on the rest of the site.
Staff could use the Post Office canteen for meals and had living and sleeping accommodation in Neville's Court, where about thirty NCOs and men were quartered so as to allow a 24-hour guard over the whole complex to be maintained.

 Tallil’s post office delivers
Mail is delivered daily to the Air Force's post office, and a 10-person team works seven days a week to make sure letters and packages get to their intended recipients.
The post office has come a long way since it opened and continually tackles challenges to offer many of the same services airmen might find at home.
While the post office has many of the services available at home, postal workers here deal in cash-only transactions and do not sell money orders, Thomas said.

Wireless Internet Post Office: Project proposal: International Development Research Centre
The research project objectives are to solve the multitude of technical and system design issues that define a Wireless Internet Post Office (WIPO) capable of delivering digital access to the widest possible population at the lowest usage and capital cost.
The research output will be a complete “how to” guide, posted on a publicly accessible web site, that small companies, universities and governments can use to build and deploy a wireless infrastructure to deliver simple but essential digital communication to millions of people across the Asia-Pacific.
The majority of the research work is the design of an end-to-end system that delivers text messaging in the most economical, robust, practical and appropriate way for the largest population possible.
