Post-Captain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Post-Captain, on the other hand, has both the rank and title of "Captain" and is always addressed as "Captain" even if he is uncommissioned (i.e., does not command a ship).
For the Patrick O'Brian novel, see Post Captain (novel).
A junior Post usually will be commissioned a frigate or a comparable ship to command, while a Senior Post will be commissioned a Ship of the line.

 Amazon.de: English Books: Post Captain
Post Captain is the second in the Aubrey/Maturin series and perhaps the first written with the knowledge that it was part of a series.
The naval activities in Post Captain seem similar to those in Hornblower and the Hotspur to the point that the climactic action appears to correspond to the same point in history.
Post Captain does pick up when war is declared and Aubrey goes back to sea.

Special Circumstances: O Post Captain, My Captain
Whereas, was I to be made post some day, I should be captain by right; but even so I should only shift my swab from one shoulder to the other.
For those not familiar with the characters: Captain Jack Aubrey, an 18th century Royal Navy officer, has been given his first ship to command at the start of the novel, and in conversation with him is Stephen Maturin, the ship's doctor.
At present I am called captain only by courtesy -- I am dependent on upon the courtesy of a parcel of damned scrubs, much as surgeons are by courtesy called Doctor.

Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin Navel Series: Master and Commander; Post Captain
Unlike the first book, a large portion of Post Captain takes place on land, and I must admit that I found these parts of the book to be the most interesting ones.
His secret career as an intelligence agent, and his acting behind the scenes on Aubrey's behalf (in Post Captain), come as somewhat of a surprise to the reader, and are not even known to Aubrey.
The plot of Post Captain is much richer and more fascinating than that of Master and Commander; it is one of those rare occasions where a sequel is actually better than its predecessor.

 Post Captain
Captain Croucher of Trumpeter, as senior captain in port, presides over the court martial: he is a protégé of Admiral Goddard, one of Ramage's father's enemies.
He discovers the Captain's orders, and escaping in boats with several of the crew, decides to carry them out himself.
Ramage is 3rd lieutenant of the frigate Sibella (later in the series he is referred to as 5th) when she is sunk on a mission to rescue aristocratic refugees from Tuscany, recently invaded by the French.

 Rambles: Patrick O'Brian, Post Captain
Post Captain is another excellent chapter in the Aubrey/Maturin saga, and O'Brian's luminous dialogue and careful explanation of nautical manuveurs make the text educational as well as fun.
Unable to secure a promotion or post with the navy-- there are far more captains than there are ships, despite the build-up towards another war with France -- Aubrey and Maturin flee to Europe to hide out at Maturin's estate in Spain.
Lucky Jack Aubrey lives up to his nickname in Post Captain, the second in Patrick O'Brian's extraordinary series of books about life in the British navy during the Napoleonic wars.

 Captain's Quarters
Captain George Elliott, USN (retired), (Exhibit 4) was John Kerry's direct commander in Coastal Division 11, while Captain Adrian Lonsdale, USCG (retired), (Exhibit 9) was Kerry's administrative commander.
Kerry, as boat captain, was the senior reporting officer and his reports would be used for medals.
I believe the merits go to the Swifties, and that their testimony is both relevant and highly probative on a central character issue introduced by the Kerry for President campaign (which continuously featured its candidate's VN service while its 527 supporters slimed the character of the President's military career).

 Post-captain - Definition of Post-captain by Webster's Online Dictionary
A captain of a war vessel whose name appeared, or was " posted," in the seniority list of the British navy, as distinguished from a commander whose name was not so posted.
The term was also used in the United States navy; but no such commission as post-captain was ever recognized in either service, and the term has fallen into disuse.

 Post Captain, by Patrick O'Brian
Stephen escapes the thoroughly unsettled ship to visit Jack, and summarises the Post Captain Jack Aubrey: he is a better officer and a duller man - the boy has quite vanished.
When we deal with people like bin Laden, this turns out to be useful -- much like Stephen being described to Christy-Palliere by Jack on p 95 of the Norton paperback of Post Captain.
Consider Captain Dumanoir of the privateer, planning this assault with the aid of articles from The Indiaman Independent or perhaps a recent bio on the Lord Nelson Network News.

MuggleNet The Book Trolley - Post Captain - Reviewed By Robbie Fischer.
This means promotion to Post Captain—not a breakfast cereal; this means he can command a big “ship of the line,” that he will always be on full pay whether he is in active service or not, and that if he lives long enough, he will eventually become an admiral on the basis of sheer seniority.
Like the first book in this twenty-volume series, Post Captain is such a vivid historical novel that the language, social setting, and naval activities become as real, as clear, and as familiar to you as the room in which you are reading it.
At a point where he could be taken up for debt and thrown in prison for the duration—when the women in his life have seriously let him down—and when the only commands available are in dirty jobs that he would hate with all his soul—Jack springs at the chance of a “temporary command.”

And yes, Captain Ed, like you, I felt helpless, and felt joy that the Flight 93 heroes (Jeremy Glick was the first one I heard about, not the "let's Roll" guy) were sacrificing to restrain the evildoers before they murdered thousands more.
Captain Ed, this is my first comment to your blog, which I just discovered a couple of weeks ago.

Post Captain, by Patrick O'Brian (2nd Page)
Listening to the unabridged Patrick Tull audiobook recording of "Post Captain" (this must be at least my eighth time through the novel) I have been struck by the recurring theme of communication barriers which so thoroughly dominate the central part of the book.
Post Captain was an interesting exercise in a writer's working out decisions about his characters.
BTW, reading Post Captain at this time of the year works particularly well for me. I can vivdly remember driving to the library to pick it up one cold October night two years ago.

A Post-Captain, on the other hand, has both the rank and title of "Captain" and is always addressed as "Captain" even if he is uncommissioned (i.e., does not command a ship).

Post Captain (Aubrey / Maturin, book 2) by Patrick O'Brian
Post Captain, the second novel in his remarkable Aubrey/Maturin series, led Mary Renault to write: 'Master and Commander raised dangerously high expectations; Post Captain triumphantly surpasses them.' This tale begins with Jack Aubrey arriving home from his exploits in the Mediterranean to find England at peace following the Treaty of Amiens.
Aubrey's adventures in escaping from France and the debtors' prison will grip the reader as fast as his unequalled actions at sea.
He and his friend Stephen Maturin, surgeon and secret agent, begin to live the lives of country gentlemen, hunting, entertaining and enjoying more amorous adventures.

 Post Captain
This may be a good thing for the country as a whole, for those naval officers who, like Jack Aubrey, had not yet made post captain it means an unsure future trying to survive on half pay, with little hope of promotion or even being thrown out of the service altogether.
, with Captain Jack Aubrey and Dr Stephen Maturin on their way back to England, with peace suddenly breaking out.
From what I've read of both series so far, I prefer O'Brian's over Forester's, as the former's main characters are far more sympathetic.
