Feminism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They also argue that an effective feminist movement should be culturally specific and address issues relevant to the women of the society in question (eg, female genital cutting in Africa or the glass ceiling issue in developed economies), and debate the extent to which certain issues such as rape, incest and mothering are universal.
The feminist movement was rooted in the progressive movement and especially in the reform movement of the 19th century.
Feminists in most cases advance their desired use of language either to promote what they claim is an equal and respectful treatment of women or to affect the tone of political discourse.

 Reflexivity is a feminist issue
Feminist sociological research methodologies are based on women's lived experiences in patriarchy, both researched and researcher's, on gender as socially constructed and historically specific, and on a political commitment to the emancipation of women.
Feminist sociologists who reject the binaries of theory and practice, objective and subjective, and researcher and researched, do so because they believe that knowing is a political process (Ramazagnolu 1992: 210), and that these binaries encourage an elitist sociology which cannot produce ways of knowing which avoid subordination (Williams 1993: 582).
Feminists should use any and every research method as long as written accounts of feminist research locate the feminist researcher within her research as an essential feature of what is feminist about it.

Post-feminism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This article was based on a number of interviews with women who largely agreed with the goals of feminism, but did not identify as feminists.
The post-feminist texts which emerged in the 1980s and '90s portrayed second-wave feminism as a monolithic entity, thereby allowing the author to criticize these generalizations.

Global Politics and the Feminist Question
Feminists have to address the new modes of governance by states and non-states, which have been referred to variously as neoliberalism, new constitutionalism, or empire.
Feminists have formed new alliances (notably, with moderate religious voices, labor, and liberal democratic states) and made new elaborations of claims for justice or equality.
Feminist efforts for basic rights - to land, full citizenship, or to choose a sexual partner - has unfolded in transnational arenas in order to apply the moral force of "the international community" or UN conventions on governments.

 postfeminism
The feminist backlash which promotes postfeminism involves younger women, some of whom forget that we have to work for the rights that men just take for granted all the time - and that vigilance is the price that we must pay for defining those rights and maintaining them.
For example, sexual harassment civil laws (often perceived as a means to better control the sexual expression of the middle class, and to persecute women and men who are not polite) and anti-pornography laws championed by some feminist contingents are viewed as being anti-sex and empowering the patriarchy.
My "definition" is that postfeminism is our reaction to a couple of generations of feminists arguing amongst themselves about the definition of feminism, about nature vs. nurture, and bad men vs. bad patriarchy.

Broadly, however, I'd say that a "feminist" post doesn't have to directly address what is commonly defined as "politics" - as we all know the personal is political - but there should be some sense in a post addressing women's place in the world.
Posts that celebrate women's lives and contributions to society - either current-day or historical - are particularly welcome.
Nominations for excellent posts (your own or by others) should usually be sent to the host of the next carnival, but if they've yet to be named, or if you have any other queries, you can reach me at natalieben (at) gmail (dot) com.

Feminists staged tantrums at the suggestion of innate math-aptitude differences between men and women, but the whole premise of the Violence Against Women Act is that men have an innate propensity to violence against women.
The Violence Against Women Act-funded centers engage in political advocacy for feminist legislation such as the "must-arrest" laws even if there is no sign of violence and even if the woman doesn't want the man arrested, and political advocacy against non-feminist legislation such as shared parental rights.

The humanist group of feminists argues that ‘the image of woman’ as represented in literature, cinema and popular perception is incomplete, false and misogynistic.
Feminist movement aims at improvement of visibility of woman, ability to express woman’s own inner self, her authentic representation, development of true image of woman in male dominated patriarchal society.

I don't think this is a very likely outcome with respect to Dr. Bitch, Echidne, Sheezlebub, Flea, Shark-Fu, or Happy, but their pseudonymity also precludes them from evolving into the visible, "public intellectual" feminist leaders that they certainly seem to otherwise have the drive and talent to become.

Feminists from Third-World countries, for their part, have participated in these counternarratives, while insisting that colonialism and nationalism have impinged differently on men and women, and that all the remapping and renaming has not been without its fissures and contradictions.
Third-World feminist histories can be understood as feminist if unearthed from the substantial resistant work these women have done within their communities and nations, including the growth of women's grass-roots local organizing.
However, their films, even when focusing on female protagonists, were not explicitly feminist in the sense of a declared political project to empower women in the contexts of patriarchy and (neo)colonialism.

Critiques of this academic post-feminism have centred upon the eternal slippage and plurality of such ‘post’ discourses and the fact that they are generally restricted to the realm of theory instead of praxis.
Simultaneously, the manner in which feminist discourses and agendas are re-presented has worked to marginalise the feminist agenda in the mainstream.  In addition, the widening of the debate on the ground whereby women's movements from different parts of the world question and expand the boundaries of theory and practice has left the politics in disarray.
Feminist and civil rights activists and organizations should be willing to — and given the skills and resources to effectively — incorporate media activism into their ongoing work, and the media democracy community should be willing to go beyond rhetoric to incorporate feminist and anti-racist practices into all media organizing efforts.

As a side note, need I mention that during the feminist movement, heterosexual, white, wealthy women were out fighting for "women's rights" when poor white, Black, Latina and/or Asian women - who have always had to work - were cleaning their houses and raising their children.
My concern however is the feeling I get from many of my progressive colleagues who feel that a woman who does have the choice to stay home for a few years to raise her kids, and chooses to do so, is somehow letting her gender down.
I just fear that some in the feminist quarter go too far and lose sight of who the common enemy is. Staying at home with children is not intrinsically bad.

Straying from his own feminist roots, he says the foremothers of the '70s overemphasized power and go-it-alone independence at the expense of women's deep need for emotional attachments, including the honorable pursuit of motherhood.
Gurian's makeover of feminist theory may spark lively debate, but Gurian said his main interest in "womanism" is to give parents a framework for understanding what's really going on inside their daughters.
Gurian also believes, however, that feminist theory is the best framework for the 10 to 20 percent of girls in crisis -- especially girls who are abused, disturbed or systematically disrespected.

Rosalyn Diprose's recent work takes advantage of Merleau-Ponty conception of an intercorporeality, or indistinction of perspectives, to critique individualistic identity politics from a feminist perspective and to ground the irreducibility of generosity as a virtue, where generosity has a dual sense of giving and being given.

The Happy Feminist: A BIG FAT RAMBLING POST ABOUT BODY IMAGE
I have always felt ambivalent about identifying body image as a feminist issue, partly because there is often too much emphasis on this issue at the expense of other equally important issues, and because it sometimes sounds frivolous when there are people starving in the world.
I think a desire to be healthy, a feminist mindset, and a better understanding of myself and my body have all helped me to overcome my previous negativity.
The increasing objectification of men should be cause for concern within the feminist community, as women increasingly become powerful and sucessful (which is a really good thing) we do have to think about new ideas of masculinty also.

But instead of asking feminist questions as a matter of course, post-feminism incorporates some of the insights about social life and power arrangements of feminist discourse without making them an explicit focus of analysis and debate.
In my "agency is more complicated than that" argument, they read a straightforward hegemony theory which was not there, thinking that I meant women suffered from some pernicious form of "false consciousness." We talked past each other, in part because I did not yet have the theoretical tools to make my case clearly.
In this kind of environment, post-feminism confronts the young feminist as something of a briar patch to be negotiated with care.
