  Postmodernism (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
The modern public, in contrast to ancient and medieval communities, is a creation of the press, which is the only instrument capable of holding together the mass of unreal individuals “who never are and never can be united in an actual situation or organization” (Kierkegaard 1962, 60).
Modern art, he says, is emblematic of a sublime sensibility, that is, a sensibility that there is something non-presentable demanding to be put into sensible form and yet overwhelms all attempts to do so.
In both cases, he argues, what is to be overcome is modernity, characterized by the image that philosophy and science are progressive developments in which thought and knowledge increasingly appropriate their own origins and foundations.

 Post Modernist View Points
Post modernism is a style of culture which reflects something in this epochal change, in a depthless, decentered, self-reflexive, eclectic, pluralistic art which blurs the boundaries between "high" and "popular" culture within art, as well as everyday life.
Post modernism springs from the resurgence of avant-garde, commodification of culture, collapse of classical ideologies, an is essentially the upshot of political failure.
Post Modernism is interested in a plurality of forms and genres, a pluralising of aesthetic criteria, where such forms and genres may long and fascinating histories, not as static but entwined, interacting, conflicting, playing off each other, from each extreme, from pathos to farce, intensity to burlesque, endlessly fertile as narrative, theatricality, and performance.

 [No title]
Modernism, as you probably know, is the movement in visual arts, music, literature, and drama which rejected the old Victorian standards of how art should be made, consumed, and what it should mean.
Modernism, for example, tends to present a fragmented view of human subjectivity and history (think of The Wasteland, for instance, or of Woolf's To the Lighthouse), but presents that fragmentation as something tragic, something to be lamented and mourned as a loss.
In modern societies, knowledge was equated with science, and was contrasted to narrative; science was good knowledge, and narrative was bad, primitive, irrational (and thus associated with women, children, primitives, and insane people).

Elliott S. Dacher, M.D.: The Limits of Modern Medicine: Frontiers of Healing
The modern worldview postulates that all phenomena are caused by unchanging universal laws that exist independently of human consciousness.
Here causality, “upward and downward,” is seen as a seamless interconnectedness of experience that lays the foundation for an integral medicine that reflects the complex and dynamic flow of forces, biological and intentional, that define the human experience and open the possibility of a larger life and health.
The modern worldview has assigned great importance to individualism, an ideal that has too often been degraded into a self-indulgent, egoistic and aggressive quest for power and material gain.

 Allthings2all: The Post Modern Explained
Lyotard proposes that the ruling idea behind modernism is the emancipation of humanity, and that to this end reason and rationalism have combined with technology and resulted not in liberation, but in totalitarianism.
On this basis he sees Christianity as a modern and authoritarian system - because in his view it tells a person what they should be rather than letting them discover who they are and allowing them to be different.
In Lyotard's analysis he rejects modernism and its systems - be they political, social or religious - yet he cannot avoid falling into the very thing he argues against.

SSRN-Embracing Chance: Post-Modern Meditations on Punishment by Bernard Harcourt
In this essay, I argue that we should abandon the misguided project of modernity, recognize once and for all the limits of reason, and turn instead to randomization and chance.
In all the modern texts, there always came this moment when the empirical facts ran out or the deductions of principle reached their limit - or both - and yet the reasoning continued.
And it was always there, at that precise moment, that we learned the most: that we could read from the text and decipher a vision of just punishment that was never entirely rational, never purely empirical, and never fully determined by the theoretical premises of the author.

Modernism was an extension of this thought and stated that we can develop our own meaning; our own reason for living, our own ethics perhaps through art or literature.
Postmodernism was a reaction to modernism; because artists and thinkers were really at a loss to find the 'big picture' or the meaning of life.

Post-apocalyptic film and the post-modern apocalypse, by Eric Dodson
Yet, in keeping with his modern morality, the post-apocalyptic hero's posture is essentially defensive, in contrast to the tribal horde's indiscriminate push to efface the remaining vestiges of the past.
From a modern, existential perspective, the hero's return to the wasteland is an expression of his character's final crystallization.
For instance, instead of focusing on preserving and reestablishing modern existential values, tomorrow's post-apocalyptic film may focus more explicitly upon how the horde finally manages to deconstruct modernity's final remnants, despite the unenlightened efforts of the last few puppet-heroes of the dying power status quo.

These two intellectual movements, historically dominating roughly the first and second halves of the twentieth century, have in common their often playful use of self-referentiality, irony, indeterminacy (or ambiguity), parody, and the exploration of language.
Post-modern art and criticism, however, challenge modernism's adherence to an ideology of artistic autonomy, individual expression, and the elitist splitting off of art from mass culture and everyday life.

 Medieval, Modern, Post-Modern
The Middle Ages, located between two moments in the narrative of the modern, has merely a delaying function-- we tarry outside the narrative for a time (a middle time) in order to reenter, to resume, to recommence the story of modernity with the Renaissance.
What I am suggesting, therefore, is that the contradictory coherence of the medieval in fact is what structures the narrative of modernity, and this coherence stands (as an apparent cen- ter) for the systematic structurality of all further inclusions and exclusions of that narrative: canonical/non-canonical, literary/non-literary, Western/non-western and so forth.
Yet, the late medieval industrial town is the scene of a ruthless class stratification and permanent class conflict, and simultaneously the site of the ideology of millenarian classlessness--a strikingly modern nexus at which the initial antithesis between the middle ages and modernity begins to come unravelled.
