Postdoctoral researcher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A postdoctoral (colloquially, "post-doc") appointment is a usually temporary job held by a person who has completed his or her doctoral studies.
Postdoctoral appointments commonly last for periods ranging between six months and five years, and are usually research-oriented.
As the doctorate degree is, by definition, the highest awarded in a field, no degree is given at the completion of a post-doctorate position.

The Rockefeller University - Postdoctoral Fellows Program
The university has a strong commitment to the full involvement of postdoctorates in all aspects of the scientific, educational and cultural activities of the community.
Each year, more than 300 postdoctorates are associated with the research activities of the 75 laboratories, where they are encouraged to continue their scientific training and pursue their research interests.
However, the university is responsible for awarding about 10 postdoctoral fellowships annually to students who are beginning their positions or are in the early stages of their training.

 AAU Postdoctoral Education Report
Although postdoctoral education has grown rapidly, it remains a highly concentrated enterprise: as shown in the Appendix attached, more than two-thirds of 1995 postdoctoral appointees were studying in just 50 institutions out of the nearly 350 doctorate-granting institutions surveyed.
Most fundamentally, the lack of institutional oversight of postdoctoral appointments, coupled with the evolution of postdoctoral education in a number of disciplines into a virtual requirement for a tenure-track faculty appointment, creates an unacceptable degree of variability and instability in this aspect of the academic enterprise.
Initial postdoctoral appointments should be no longer than two to three years in duration, and should be renewed only on the basis of career advancement and achievement by the postdoctoral appointee.

 Postdoctoral Program in Environmental Chemistry
The spirit of this program is for research leaders in environmental chemistry, after notification of the award, to recruit excellent young Ph.D. graduates from the fields of physical, organic, inorganic, biological chemistry or associated fields in chemical engineering, and provide them with the highest caliber of research experience and education in environmental science.
Whereas the postdoctoral Fellow may not initially be experienced in environmental science, the Foundation trusts that the Fellow will have demonstrated the highest caliber of capabilities and research accomplishments in basic chemistry or chemical engineering as a graduate student.
The expectation is that the postdoctoral research accomplishments and educational broadening under this program should allow the Fellow to achieve a position where high quality research related to the environment will continue.
