Post-grunge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some of these newer bands alienated fans of the original grunge and early post-grunge sound, and are often referred to simply as either alternative rock or "modern rock" rather than post-grunge.
Post-grunge (referred to as nu-grunge in Britain) is a subgenre of American alternative rock that emerged in the mid-1990s as an offshoot of the Seattle grunge movement.
Post-grunge developed from the grunge music scene of the early 1990s.

Grunge bands avoided the complex, high budget presentations that bands from other musical genres such as heavy metal were known for; complex light arrays, pyrotechnics, and other technological visual effects unrelated to playing the music were not part of the concerts.
Clothing commonly worn by grunge fans in the Northwest in its early years was a blend of the punk aesthetic with the typical outdoorsy clothing (most notably flannel shirts) of the region.
Grunge fans in the Pacific Northwest believed that the media gave excessive importance to the clothing worn by grunge musicians and fans, along with other aspects of the local culture.

After grunge's initial heyday had passed, post-grunge kept going strong, with a new wave of bands appearing in the mid- to late '90s; some were able to maintain their popularity from one album to the next, while others wound up as one-hit wonders.
The angst-ridden, sober introspection typically associated with grunge became virtual requirements in the hands of post-grunge, which tended to view it as a path to artistic legitimacy.
After grunge's breakthrough, it didn't take long for post-grunge to appear; bands like Bush and Candlebox became huge successes just a couple years after Nirvana topped the charts at the beginning of 1992.

Grunge didn't just up and die in 1994.
The Seattle scene would survive, but largely as it had before 1991, as an underground music scene; essentially, the scene returned to its roots and away from the limelight.
Indeed, some of the best 90's alt-rock albums were released in 1994, such as Soundgarden's Superunknown, Stone Temple Pilots' Purple, Alice In Chains' Jar of Flies, and Pearl Jam's Vitalogy are considered as important albums of the 1990's.

Top Ten Mediocre Post-Grunge / Alternative Bands - Staff Top 10 - Stylus Magazine
Though these guys don’t necessarily come from grunge’s lineage—certainly the power-pop of “Allison Road” and “Til I Hear it From You” could have happened decades earlier—they’d deserve this #1 if only for their obvious post-grunge masterpiece, “Hey Jealousy,” which is simply one of the greatest songs of the modern rock era.
This was when post-grunge started to really cease to contain any grunge in them at all—Semisonic and Fastball were only a couple steps away.
But still, these guys were great—they wrote a bunch of urgent, instantly nostalgic love songs that still sound quite fine today.

Compilations like Up Next make the late eighties working class youth that put Seattle's punk-cum-grunge on the alternative music map seem like an endangered species, if they haven't been wiped out already.

 Something Awful
British people, heartbroken by the fact that they were too effete to make Grunge, had to come up with an equally iconic style of music in the nineties as a matter of national pride.
It didn’t make much of an impact in America, aside from our brief national flirtation with tolerating Oasis (as it turns out, not a good idea), but the UK is still just as menaced by its shadow as America is by the shadow of Grunge.
Out of this necessity was born Britpop, which allowed English musicians to be as square and effeminate as they wanted while still doing enormous amounts of cocaine.
