Largely ignored by film critics and even film historians, postproduction is a difficult subject to tackle because it is a complicated procedure that takes place "behind-the-scenes." Only a few key people are ever involved in the editing of a film, and one of its very purposes is to go unnoticed.
Film editor Ralph Rosenblum describes postproduction: "The process is as complex and difficult to define as the adjustments, cuts, and shuffling that make a writer's final product so different from his first draft (Rosenblum 6)." The postproduction supervisor typically does little hands-on work, but instead supervises the various trades, disciplines, and personnel necessary to complete the postproduction procedure.
