Postage meter - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A postage meter is an electro-mechanical device for producing evidence of postage (see mail).
Postage meters are regulated by a country's postal authority; for example, in the United States, the United States Postal Service specifies the rules for the creation, support, and use of postage meters.
The postage meter was introduced in the United States in 1912 by Arthur Pitney, who in 1920 went into business with partner Walter Bowes in order to produce the machines.

Postage Meter Machine: The entire mechanism, whether operated by hand or by mechanical means, which houses a postage meter unit and all other devices needed for the operation of the meter unit by which the unit imprint is placed upon envelopes or tapes.
The postage meter unit is detachable (except in the desk-type model) and when detached, it is then carried to a post office for setting upon prepayment of a specified amount of postage.
The postage meter unit imprints by a geared process the die member upon envelopes or tapes and is used on all classes of mail.

A postage meter is a mailing system that prints postage directly on the envelope (or on an adhesive tape) for any type of mail -- first, second, third, or fourth class; air mail, registered mail, special delivery, or other special services.
Postage meters come with postal scales which are often integrated into the postage meter itself.
A good example of a postage meter with an integrated scale is the FP mymail.

The meter migration plan is aimed at transitioning the installed base of meters from certain technology demonstrated to be susceptible to tampering, counterfeit or misuse to available technology offering enhanced security.
Phase I accomplished the retirement of all mechanical meters and Phase II required the retirement of all manually reset meters (meters that must be reset manually by a Postal Service employee).
Phase IV meters are distinguished by a timeout feature that disables a meter that is not reset within a specified period or failure to meet some prescribed criteria.

A postage meter is a welcome addition to any office that sends even a relatively small amount of mail.
The meter does not require a service contract because the owner - the manufacturer - is responsible for repairs on the unit.
Postage prices, of course, are set by the USPS, and postage meter manufacturers are prohibited from marking them up, so you do not need to compare postage costs.

Postage Meter Interface to multi-carrier shipping system
The operator presses "P" for print, which processes the transaction; the correct postage is automatically sent to the postage meter, which then generates a meter tape.
If letters are to be batch processed, the operator simply places the letters in the postage meter bin, and the postage meter begins processing all the letters in the bin, applying a per piece charge to each letter, and updating the Malvern System with the accumulated postal charges.
For batch mail transactions where only the total amount of allocated postage is known, the Malvern Interface divides the amount equally and applies the individual amount to each piece in the batch, regardless whether letters or meter tapes are being produced.

Some are one-time fees, like the $25 to ship your postage meter to you or to replace it if something goes wrong (yes, you pay for replacement shipping, not them).
For example, if you load $200 into your postage meter, there is often a $5-10 fee that is charged on top of the postage.
You don't have a choice, because most postage meters won't even work after a rate increase unless you have done the "software upgrade." And, as you know, it only takes about 30 seconds for them to do it.

Communications with Meter Users One postage meter manufacturer was concerned about inadequate, misleading, or confusing communications to meter users, and suggested that phases III and IV be combined to avoid possible confusion that might arise from having multiple retirement dates.
The Postal Service is working to ensure the integrity of the meter retirement process with expeditious, accurate, and informative communications to postage meter users, Postal Service employees, and postage meter manufacturers, and it expects manufacturers to provide accurate, clear, and timely information to their customers.
If such a meter has a feature that automatically disables the meter if it is not reset within a specified time period or when certain preprogrammed criteria are met, it is called an enhanced meter.
