	Straits Settlements - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The Straits Settlements were a collection of territories of the British East India Company in Southeast Asia, which were given collective administration in 1826 as a crown colony, as opposed to the protectorates (native princely states) composing the Federated Malay States.
		Initially, the Straits Settlements consisted of Penang, sometimes officially called Prince of Wales Island, Singapore with about a score of islets of insignificant size lying in its immediate vicinity, the islands and territory of the Dinding, Province Wellesley and the town and territory of Malacca.
		The establishment of the Straits Settlements followed the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824 between the United Kingdom and the Netherlands, by which the Malay archipelago was divided into a British zone in the north and a Dutch zone in the south.

	The Ultimate Straits Settlements - American History Information Guide and Reference
		Initially, the Straits Settlements consisted of Penang, Singapore, and Malacca.
		In 1867, the Settlements became a British crown colony, which was extended with the addition of Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands to Singapore, and the addition of Labuan in 1912.
		The Governor of the Straits Settlements also acted as High Commissioner of the Malay States and Brunei, which were British protectorates in the region.

	POSTAGE STAMPS OF INDIA USED ABROAD
		In a number of British-controlled areas scattered around the Indian Ocean, Indian stamps were used to prepay postage until the establishment of local postal systems (still under the general control of British India) permitted these areas to issue their own stamps (and thereby garner the revenues therefrom).
		Indian stamps used in these places can only be identified by their postmarks and while this is relatively easy for the more recent CDS-type cancel,, it is rather more difficult with the older, numbered, postmarks.
		A special stamp was used, in addition to the normal Indian postage, to raise funds for the expedition.
