Postal marking collectors are concerned with the quality of the mark and barely notice the stamp's condition.
Postal marking collectors judge quality in reference to clarity, strength and completeness of the strike (a strike is the impression of the mark).
Among three or four strikes of the same mark on the same kind of stamp, the closest to SON and clearly readable will command the higher price but one is rarely presented with choices, particularly for 2 rated marks.

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Postal Service might begin marking letters and packages to try to reassure Americans that their mail has been inspected for anthrax and cleared for delivery, a spokesman said Monday.
The plan to address concern over mail safety came as the Postal Service prepared to begin sorting and delivering the first batch of letters and packages that were impounded at Washington's giant Brentwood mail-sorting facility after anthrax was discovered there Oct 15.
The Postal Service also said that traces of anthrax were found in two postal boxes in a post office in the Pentagon in nearby Arlington, Va. One box was rented by an unidentified member of the Navy and the other was unassigned, the Defense Department says.

On mail, a cancellation (or cancel for short) is a postal marking applied to a postage stamp or postal stationery indicating that the item has been used.
(The confusion arises because of the practice of some postal administrations of applying the postmark directly on the stamp, at the cost of legibility.) The term "killer" is sometimes used as a more vivid synonym for "cancel".
Pen cancels may still occasionally be seen (sometimes done with marker), typically when a postal clerk notices that a stamp has not been touched by the automated machinery (though there have sometimes been complaints by stamp collectors of redundant pen cancels by overzealous postal employees).
