Topic: Posthorn

  Early History 7
The words "Posthorn in Bb" occur for the solo also in the Kritische Gesamtausgabe (Mahler 1974) of the work and in a later Boosey and Hawkes edition (Mahler [1943]) of the composition, as well (Eakin 1999).
The Posthorn in Bb is not used today on the solo certainly because the instrument is not easily accessible and would involve an entirely different set of technical and acoustic problems.
From a historical viewpoint, it would be most interesting to hear a performance of the solo on a three-valve Posthorn in Bb and the reader is encouraged to inform the author of this document if such a performance is forthcoming or such a recording is available.

Compare Prices and Read Reviews on Haydn: Trumpet Concerto, et al / Wobisch, Heiller, et al at Epinions.com
The posthorn is a very difficult instrument to play and it is hard to play fast passages, so a lot depends on your tongue and the intonation of each note.
The posthorn almost sings its part, and although the violins have the bulk of the song's melodic passages, you want to listen to that posthorn hitting those notes perfectly.
The posthorn even accompanies and hearing octave leaps from the instrument is something that is very hard to do, and Wobisch does this with such elegance that it sounds very pretty but at the same time, aggressive.

 Palladio: May 2005
The work is titled after and based on the "Posthorn solo", a section of the third movement of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 3, originally composed in 1898.
In Posthorn I live sample my own playing as well as the samples of the symphony that are being triggered.
While the basic shape of Posthorn is fixed according to the melodic structure of the Mahler piece, its details are improvised, depending on how I unfold the melodic material and the dynamics with which I play.

John Neumeier's choreography of Mahler's Third Symphony, reviewed by Sissy von Kotzebue
In the third movement of the third symphony, which contains the posthorn, Mahler imitates the atmosphere in the forest by using animal sounds and a bird-song motive in a kind of folk song style.
And the posthorn, symbol of yearning and also of transience, evokes a counter-world with a higher sense beyond life and death.
When the posthorn is played for the second time, Neumeier does something very interesting: Like Mahler, he creates two different worlds.

You also see that this postmark has no "lightning's" through the posthorn as my "Posthorn Postmark" and newer Posthorn Postmarks has, but the lightning's is just used to symbolise that the telegraph service was not connected to our GPO at the time this postmark was issued.
There were 183 small railway stations and railway stops using these postmarks in different versions in the period from 1924 to 1969 (the latest impression of a Posthorn Postmark is from 2 January 1969).
