Postmodern American Poetry gives us the original quakes, the serial aftershocks, and the seismic disruptions that will continue into the millenium.
Beginning in 1950 with Charles Olson, Postmodern American Poetry is the first anthology since Donald Allen's groundbreaking collection to fully represent the movements of American avant-garde poetry.
Included, too, is the rich array of poetry written since 1975— language and performance poetry, the work of African American, Hispanic, Asian American, gay and lesbian and women experimentalists.

 Albert Gelpi on postmodern poetry
Poetry need no longer be autotelic; "the poetry does not matter," "East Coker" tells us, as it has to matter to a Modernist, because it matters in a larger scheme of reference and relevance.
The vitality and variety of American poetry into the sixties come from the postwar poets' efforts to define their voices out of and against their long-lived and larger-than-life predecessors.
Just as American poetry in the first half of this century turns on the dialectic, within the period and within the poets, between Modernism and the Romanticism it masked, so the poetry of the second half of the century can be read as the even more complicated dialectic between Neoromanticism and Postmodernism.

For anyone carping at the idea of the postmodern or the avant-garde as wanly intellectual, fiercely separatist, beside the point, or even nonexistent, Hoover's large-scale collection of recent experimental American poetry (and a concluding selection of essays about it) should persuade that it's not.

WHOSE NEW AMERICAN POETRY?: ANTHOLOGIZING IN THE NINETIES
If the The Postmoderns thus has something of a retro air, the problem is that the "radical" tradition of "Projective Verse," which was its point of departure, and which was by this time some thirty years old, was accepted by its adherents as normative without the further debate which might have thickened the plot.
Postmodern American Poetry has 701 pages and 103 poets, From the Other Side of the Century includes somewhat fewer poets (84) but runs to 1135 pages, which means that its selections are much more comprehensive than what we usually find in anthologies.

ENM3220 - THE NEW POETRY AND PROSE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Donald Allen''s anthology "The New American Poetry 1945-1960" remains the most important anthology of American alternative poetry in the post-war era.
Despite the fact that it failed to include a sufficient number of fl or women poets, it was nevertheless a remarkably accurate and useful guide to the poetry of its time and also anticipated much of the poetry and related prose that came after it.
Paul Hoover''s "Postmodern American Poetry" (1994) builds upon these foundations by including the Language poets and a broad base of performance-related poetries.

 Postmodern American Poetry
The explosively innovative and radically exploratory poetries of North American and Britain from the past 50 years (from 1950 to present) will be explored in this "reading workshop." The emphasis will be on poetry that works in nontraditional and unconventional ways to create new music and new meanings.
The reading workshop is less concerned with analysis or explanation of individual poems than with finding ways to intensify the experience of poetry, of the poetic, through a consideration of how the different styles and structures and forms of contemporary poetry can affect the way we see and understand the world.
The "Wednesdays at 4" poetry series is an integral part of the class: the readings are scheduled to make it possible to attend during class time and a number of this Spring's visiting poets will meet with the workshop before their readings.

This sort of affective response to postmodern thought draws on deep aquifers of mistrust and resentment, some of it well-merited--which makes the patience and charity that my friends display in their contributions all the more welcome.
When wood s lot blogged the postmodernism conversation, he found profound, thoughtful nuggets from Tom, David, and Steve, and quoted me as saying, "Hey, the book is cheap." Oh, well.
As David, Tom, and Steve are so kindly contributing to hype about my book on postmodernism, may I simply emphasize that they are sagacious, insightful, good-looking, reliable, and their reading lists draw on the finest work on contemporary writers.

RageBoy, not one to permit a bluff lightly, has put his postmodern theological cards on the table and even challenged me to show what I'm holding.
