Postmodern art (sometimes called po-mo) is a term used to describe art which is thought to be after or in contradiction to some aspect of modernism.
Postmodern art uses a vocabulary of media, genres or styles as parts of an extended visual language that goes beyond the boundaries of the modernist vocabulary.
Seeing as such, postmodernism is in a sense art's reconcilliation of itself and its past, and postmodernists typically collect influences from all periods and schools, using several media in a given piece in a pastiche-like form.

Working from a reconstructive postmodern perspective of artistic practice within the context of a public school which enacted a conservative curriculum orientation I found myself engaging in a process of self-censorship by selecting themes and issues that would not be considered controversial within the context of this elementary school.
In an attempt to legitimize the arts academically, DBAE presents a curriculum based in the in the "disciplines" of studio art, art history, aesthetics, and art criticism that is testable, sequential, and accountable (Pearse, 1992).
Finally, although artists working from a postmodern reconstructionist stance may find working in the school a challenge, it is of critical importance that their voices be heard in the schools, as they may be able to encourage students and teachers to see and understand in ways that challenge modernist epistemological perspectives.

Critical postmodern art is based on the postmodern assertion that all artist perspectives are valid, but unlike postmodernism, the critical postmodern holds that greater understanding of society is possible by viewing it through the lens of individual artworks or narratives.

Postmodernism is hard to define, because it is a concept that appears in a wide variety of disciplines or areas of study, including art, architecture, music, film, literature, sociology, communications, fashion, and technology.
Postmodern art (and thought) favors reflexivity and self-consciousness, fragmentation and discontinuity (especially in narrative structures), ambiguity, simultaneity, and an emphasis on the destructured, decentered, dehumanized subject.
Postmodernism then is the critique of grand narratives, the awareness that such narratives serve to mask the contradictions and instabilities that are inherent in any social organization or practice.
