Topic: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Patient's Report
Orthostatic intolerance, a broad title for blood pressure abnormalities such as neurally mediated hypotension (NMH) and POTS, is a common symptom of some types of CFS.
Postural intolerance has been likened to a fever in that it is a symptom which can have many diverse root causes, both central and peripheral.
Astronauts often develop a temporary form of orthostatic tachycardia upon returning to earth due to the deconditioning effects of weightlessness, which are quite similar to prolonged bed rest.

  Tachycardia
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome[?] (POTS) is a form of tachycardia that occurs with a change in body position (eg, going from laying down to standing up) and which is generally due to dysautonomia[?].
Tachycardia is a general term that is applied in a lot of different contexts.
Tachycardia, as applied in adult medicine, is defined as a heart rate of over 100 beats per minute (BPM).

Treatment of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome and Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is defined as a complex syndrome with clinical manifestations of orthostatic intolerance with symptoms of lightheadedness, fatigue, signs of edema, and acrocyanosis associated with orthostatic tachycardia within 10 minutes of upright posture and without significant orthostatic hypotension [1].
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is often manifested by a state of orthostatic intolerance, which is defined as provocation of symptoms upon standing, such as exercise intolerance, extreme fatigue, lightheadedness, lack of concentration, tremors, nausea, headache, near syncope, and occasionally syncope.
Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome has been categorized into a primary form for which no cause has been found, and a secondary form, which is usually associated with a particular disease [4].

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (or POTS) is a condition of orthostatic intolerance in which a change from the supine position to an upright position causes an abnormally large increase in heart rate, often, but not always accompanied by a fall in blood pressure.
The syndrome was identified as such by Schondorf and Low in 1993.
Inappropriate sinus tachycardia must also be considered as there is an overlap in symptoms of IST and POTS.

Orthostatic hypotension occurs in about 20% of the elderly; it is more common among those with coexisting disorders, especially hypertension, and among residents of long-term care facilities.
Orthostatic hypotension is diagnosed when a marked fall in measured BP and symptoms suggesting hypotension are provoked by standing and relieved by lying down.

— Sinus tachycardia is a rhythm in which the rate of impulses arising from the SA node is elevated.
The resting sinus rate in older children [1] and adults [2] is approximately 65 to 85 beats/min with some authors suggesting a slowing in older age [3].
— The most common causes of sinus tachycardia are the normal response to exercise and conditions in which catecholamine release is physiologically enhanced — flight, fright, anger, or stress.
