Potamogetonaceae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Potamogetonaceae is the botanical name of a family of flowering plants.
The fruit consists of 1-4 drupelets or achenes.

POTAMOGETONACEAE B   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Members of the Potamogetonaceae have been variously combined with members of the Zosteraceae, Cymodoceaceae, and Zannichelliaceae, Najadaceae to comprise a family called either the Zosteraceae, Najadaceae, or Potamogetonaceae.
The Potamogetonaceae, as here interpreted, are separated from these other families by their perfect flowers, lack of spathe-like bract, and in some species, the presence of turions.
Regardless of this phenotypic plasticity, collections of the Potamogetonaceae in particular and aquatic vascular plants in general are often taken regardless of the presence of reproductive structures.

Potamogetonaceae in Flora of North America @ efloras.org
Potamogetonaceae, as here interpreted, are separated from the other families by their bisexual flowers, the absence of spathelike bracts, and in some species, the presence of turions.
Regardless of phenotypic plasticity, collections of Potamogetonaceae (and aquatic vascular plants in general) are often taken with little attention to the presence or absence of reproductive structures.
The structures are produced at the stem tips and eventually fall to the substrate, either by a portion of the stem breaking off or by the stem itself falling to the substrate.

 Alismatales
Juncaginaceae + Posidoniaceae + Ruppiaceae + Cymodoceaceae + Zosteraceae + Potamogetonaceae: sulphated phenolic acids +, leucanthocyanins, flavones 0; leaf ± linear, base auriculate, ligulate; P 0 or reduced ["abaxial outgrowth" of A], anthers sessile, pollen inaperturate, nectary 0, carpels with complete postgenital fusion [sampling!].
Posidoniaceae + Ruppiaceae + Cymodoceaceae + Zosteraceae + Potamogetonaceae: aquatics; rhizome with endodermis; epidermis chlorophyllous; water pollination; carpels ascidiate [sampling!], 1 apical atropous ovule/carpel; embryo with massive elongated hypocotyl, also prominent in seedling, collar or base of hypocotyl much enlarged.
Potamogetonaceae are aquatic plants most of which have more or less petiolate leaves with midrib and cross veins; there is usually a conspicuous basal ligule.

 PBIO 450 Lecture Notes - Alismatidae -- Spring 1999
The evolutionary history of the Najadales is in large part a story of floral reduction associated with progressive adaptation to aquatic and eventually marine habitats.
The Aponogetonaceae and Potamogetonaceae are fresh-water aquatics with submerged or floating leaves, but often with emergent inflorescences.
Both have drupelets, but those of the Potamogetonaceae are sessile whereas those of Ruppiaceae are stipitate.
