potassium - HighBeam Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Potassium has several useful tartaric acid salts, e.g., Rochelle salt (sodium potassium tartrate), tartar (argol) and cream of tartar (potassium hydrogen tartrate), and tartar emetic (potassium antimony tartrate).
Potassium metal is produced commercially by a thermochemical process in which molten potassium chloride is reacted with sodium vapor; this method is also used to produce liquid sodium-potassium alloys.
Potassium was discovered in 1807 by Humphry Davy, who decomposed potash with an electric current.

Antimony is transported in the blood, its distribution varying among species and dependent on its valence state (Felicetti et al., 1974b).
Antimony is a common urban air pollutant, occurring at an average concentration of 0.001 ÀÀg/mÃÃ3ÄÄ (Beliles, 1979).
Although evidence for an increased incidence of cancer was not observed for rats and mice fed potassium antimony tartrate (0.262 and 0.35 mg Sb/kg/day, respectively), the maximum tolerated dose was not used (Schroeder, 1968; Kanisawa and Schroeder, 1969; Schroeder, 1970).

Antimony trioxide is used as a flame retardant in textiles, as a catalyst, and as an opacifier in glass, enamels and ceramics.
Distribution Absorbed trivalent and pentavalent antimony compounds differ significantly in their distribution; trivalent compounds have an affinity for red blood cells whereas pentavalent antimony is found in the plasma.
Inhalation Pulmonary toxicity Dusts and fumes of antimony and its compounds are irritant to the respiratory tract and mucous membranes and inhalation causes conjunctivitis, laryngitis, pharyngitis, tracheitis, rhinitis and bronchitis (Renes, 1953; Taylor, 1966).

Antimony is alloyed with other metals such as lead to increase its hardness and strength; its primary use is in antimonial lead, which is used in grid metal for lead acid storage batteries.
Antimony is considered to have high acute toxicity based on short-term oral tests in rats, mice, and guinea pigs.
The primary effects from chronic exposure to antimony in humans are respiratory effects that include antimony pneumoconiosis (inflammation of the lungs due to irritation caused by the inhalation of dust), alterations in pulmonary function, chronic bronchitis, chronic emphysema, inactive tuberculosis, pleural adhesions, and irritation.

Animal studies The LD of intramuscular antimony tartrate administered to rabbits was raised from 90 mg Sb/kg in controls to 160 mg Sb/kg in animals treated with intramuscular dimercaprol (30 mg/kg one hour after intoxication followed by 15 mg/kg at six, 24 and 48 hours) (Braun et al, 1946).

Antimony compounds include antimony pentasulfide, antimony chloride, antimony pentoxide, antimony potassium tartrate, antimony trichloride, antimony trioxide, antimony trisulfide, and stibine, or antimony hydride, which is formed when antimony is exposed to nascent hydrogen.
Antimony is a moderate fire hazard in the forms of dust and vapor when exposed to heat or flame; it is a moderate explosion hazard in the form of dust when exposed to flame.
Antimony metal is stable under ordinary conditions and is not readily attacked by air or water; it is a poor conductor of heat and electricity.

Although some data indicate that long-term exposure of rats to antimony trioxide and trisulfide increased the incidence of lung tumors (Wong et al., 1979; Watt, 1980; Groth et al., 1986; Bio/dynamics, 1989), the U.S. EPA has not evaluated antimony or antimonials for carcinogenicity and a Weight-of-Evidence classification is currently unavailable.
Antimony is transported in the blood, its partitioning between erythrocytes and plasma being a function of the valence state of the element.
Several studies have described the systemic subchronic toxicity of antimony and antimonials in animals and are summarized in ATSDR (1990) and U.S. Subchronic (24-week) exposure of rats to metallic antimony at doses of 500 to 1,000 mg/kg/day decreased plasma protein levels, hemoglobin levels, and hematocrit (Sungawa, 1981; Hiraoka, 1986).

The medical regime imposed on Napoleon by his doctors included treatment with antimony potassium tartrate, regular enemas and a 600 milligram dose of mercuric chloride to purge his intestines in the days immediately prior to his death.
A group of researchers from the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Department speculate that this treatment may have led to Napoleon's death by causing a serious potassium deficiency.
In May, 2005 a team of Swiss physicians claimed that the reason for Napoleon's death was stomach cancer, which was also the cause of his father's death.
