Potchefstroom is a large academic town with the North-West University, situated on the banks of the Mooi River (literally pretty river), 120 km west-southwest of Johannesburg in the North West Province of South Africa.
The North-West University is a merged tertiary educational institution that was created on 1 January 2004, with campuses at Potchefstroom, Mafikeng, Vanderbijlpark and Mankwe.
The Potchefstroom Campus (formerly the Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys, founded in 1869) is the largest and the head office of the University is situated there.

The former Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education (PU for CHE) merged with the former University of North-West on 1 January 2004, to form the North-West University.
In its continuous quest to be a university of international and modern standards, the PU for CHE embarked on a process for the promotion of quality and innovation in education and research in 1997, in co-operation with the Centre for Higher Education Policy Studies (CHEPS) in the Netherlands.
The academic activities at the PU for CHE are the main thrust of the University: the tuition of undergraduate and postgraduate students and research.

Potchefstroom University agreed to a formal human, ethical committee approved, pilot clinical study in the use and application of the Rosa Roxburghii Fruit in accordance with the Chinese proven clinical trials.
Potchefstroom University has to date not yet released the formal clinical study results obtained.
Potchefstroom University did however confirmed to the Life Enrichment Institute that the study conclusively proofed that Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) did not increase in any of the trial groups and that the Life Enrichment Institute therefore could not claim increased SOD levels as per the Chinese clinical studies.
