Potemkin village - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Potemkin villages were, purportedly, fake settlements erected at the direction of Russian minister Grigori Aleksandrovich Potemkin to fool Empress Catherine II during her visit to Crimea in 1787.
Conventional wisdom has it that Potemkin, who led the Crimean military campaign, had hollow facades of villages constructed along the desolate banks of the Dnieper river in order to impress the monarch and her travel party with the value of her new conquests, thus enhancing his standing in the empress's eyes.
The term "Potemkin village" is also often used by judges, especially judges who dissent from the majority's opinion on a particular matter, to describe an inaccurate or tortured interpretation and/or application of a particular legal doctrine to the specific facts at issue.

Propagandhi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Chris Hannah adopted the pseudonym "Glen Lambert" for use in the release of Potemkin City Limits, causing a great deal of confusion among fans.
While all the band members had used pseudonyms on all the previous releases and continued the tradition with Potemkin City Limits, in September 2005, G7 Welcoming Committee had announced that Chris had left the band in 2003, and the remaining members had found a replacement in one Glen Lambert, formerly of the Portage Terriers.
This claim was quickly proven to be untrue through a multitude of sources, but many fans, not realizing it was all a hoax, were victims of Hannah's sarcastic sense of humour.

The band’s newest effort, Potemkin City Limits, is to be released simultaneously in Canada (on G7 Welcoming Committee Records) and the U.S. (on Fat Wreck Chords) on Oct. 18.
It is based on the story of Grigori Potemkin and his efforts to impress Empress Catherine II by erecting false villages along the Volga during her tour of the Crimea.
Potemkin City Limits means to suggest that perhaps we have arrived at a point in history where the deception has reached its extreme, most absurd conclusion.

This may feel like a thesis but when you get the opportunity to write about one of your favorite band's new releases, you grab and run with it.
Four years have passed since, Today's Empires, Tomorrows Ashes was released on Fat Wreck Chords in 2001 and not only have things become more musically stale than ever, but politically things have changed drastically since Propagandhi have last spoken out.
Potemkin City Limits contains more substance and wisdom than most high school classrooms contain these days.

 Eye - On Disc - 10.27.05
Potemkin City Limits is basically a lighter version of their last release, 2000's Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes.
Potemkin's "Rock for Sustainable Capitalism," for example, is a companion to Empires' "Back to the Motor League": both take the piss out of punk, but the latter was an instant classic, while the former is just boring.
Not just a sum of their heritage, the Edmonton quintet brings haunting bridges that are pure Prairie midnights, as well as a jerk and jangle all their own, the bass and drums slapping hands with a swagger so gritty, you can't help but imagine yourself dancing on a pile of broken ashtrays.

Propagandhi - Potemkin City Limits | sputnikmusic   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Potemkin combines the prog-thrash breakdowns and abstract song structures of TETA with a more straight-forward punk rock/hardcore sound that is very reminiscent of their older work from the mid-'90s.
Although not as balls-to-the-wall as TETA and less guitar-heavy, most of the songs on PCL are long (by punk rock standards), involving, and intricate, combining break-neck tempos with slow free-time jams, blistering lead guitar work, incredible basslines, awe-inspiring drumming, and in general, absolutely superb musicianship.
As I've read in some interviews, Todd is slowly becoming the driving force behind Prop's musical direction, as Chris Hannah seems to finally be tiring of the musical life (he's stated that it's not his "life", and he kinda fell into it).

CANOE -- JAM! Music: CD Review: Propagandhi: Potemkin...
First things first: Potemkin villages were fake riverbank settlements supposedly built by the evil Russian field marshal to impress Catherine II with the value of her conquest during a tour of the Crimea in 1787.
Now, add a snappy pop-culture reference from Ike and Tina's Nutbush City Limits (which also serves, we presume, as a subliminal swipe at Dubya) and you've got the title of Propagandhi's long-awaited fourth full-length.
And if that means making you Google Potemkin instead of porn for once in order to understand the handle of their new disc, well, that's a good start.

Well I'm here to let you know that I disagree with most of the lyrical content of Propaghandi's new Fat Wreck Chords disc Potemkin City Limits, but the music rocks and if I was still doing radio I'd damn sure play it on the air.
Their unholy meld of punk rock thrash melodics with prog rock is an energetic and inviting assault to the senses whether you agree with the politically charged polemics or not.
The term "Potemkin village" comes from an apocryphal story about this Russian dude Potemkin who made up a bunch of fake village facades to impress Catherine The Great as she went by once.

By this I mean I find it hard to believe that they can top their effort on their last released album, but they always do.
Although it took the better part of 5 years to release, Potemkin City Limits is finally here and it has surprised once again.
I think the main reason for their continued success as a band is their lack of recycling chords/melodies/phrases/lyrics/etc unlike most "punk" bands out there.

Well, October 18th came and went and I didn’t scramble to grab the latest Propagandhi release… that release being Potemkin City Limits.
For you n00bs, Propagandhi was by far the most influencial band in my high school years and single handedly made me the bitter, overtly critical left winger I’ve not become today.
To my surprise, I emerged from the other side of this album with a small, albiet strong feeling that there may still be a chance for those who wish to use music as a viable medium to push an important messege to the masses.
