Pothole Skinny   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Pothole Skinny was founded by multi-instrumentalist Stephen Connolly in the late 90s as vehicle for what could best be described as pastorally-inclined acid folk explorations.
Pothole Skinny's music is pretty, but it's not easy; the stories it tells are harsher and weirder than the ear-pleasing surfaces suggest.
Pothole Skinny use primarily acoustic and electric guitars, but also banjo, organ, cello, flute and more, to explore the ways that music can be both alluring and enigmatic.

  Encyclopedia: Pothole Skinny
Pothole Skinny is a music group consisting of Stephen Connolly, Mark Dagley, Scott Freyer, and Frank Murphy.
Pothole Skinny was formulated by Stephen with a purpose to forge a group with a focus on folk song, instrumental compositions, and improvisation.
Prior to gathering the current line-up, the "Pothole Skinny" banner was used by Stephen for solo song work, private cassette releases, and CDr releases...

I thought this was a full LP for some reason, then I found out it was only a six song EP.
Overall, the only way to improve this EP would be to make it an LP and give me more Pothole Skinny music.

Pothole Skinny’s Time Shapes The Forest Lakes is certainly a folk record in the layman’s sense.
It also begs the question whether this is dynamic by design, fouled by a basic homeliness in Pothole Skinny’s vocal delivery, or a misevaluation of their own strengths.
It’s a strength Pothole Skinny would be wise to cultivate further as they head further into the mysterious twilight on their own road to folk mutation.

 Ink 19 :: Pothole Skinny
If rural hippie folk is your idea of a good time, then rejoice, Pothole Skinny are here to save you.
Like some sinister, far less naive Belle and Sebastian, Pothole Skinny are an artsy but delightfully un-pompous threesome who seem to write songs more or less as an excuse for free-form jamming, resulting in 7-minute-long tracks of half-baroque campfire weirdness.
On the album's finer moments, however, Pothole Skinny strike a fine balance between the considered and the accidental, approaching the imagined sounds of the Incredible String Band featuring the entire Perishable collective.

Pothole Skinny: On their debut album, "Time Shapes the Forest Lake," these psyche-folksters craft a minimalist landscape of acouctic guitars, flutes, cello, percussive effects and odd voices from the aether.
Pothole Skinny's latest album, "Time Shapes the Forest Lake," is available on the Perhaps Transparent label.

Psychedelic Folk Pop and Psychedelic Pop Folk reviews
A beautifully designed cover, for a group with a beautiful name, "Pothole Skinny", a name that reminds me of potheads like Gong, as it gives me the impression this must be a name for a psych folk pop band.
It is in fact even more in the direction of acid psych folk through very moody instrumentation, with a feel for both pop song structure as with an openness to create various colourful moods, with harmonium, bowed psaltery, gopichand, harp, acoustic guitars, and cello, especially on "Antique Gasoline".
All ideas of Pothole Skinny are well balanced, and with clear expressions, always flowing as gently as noon breeze and the ever moving shadows of leaves in bright sunlight.

After 30 seconds of chimes deliver a warning notice that something ominous is to come, Pothole Skinny's Time Shapes the Forest Lake starts things off with a song that is, at first glance, a pleasant, melodic pop-folk song in the tradition of someone like Elliott Smith or Iron and Wine.

 Mundane Sounds
Nope, Pothole Skinny go for a more organic trip, with such wonderful instruments as acoustic guitars, chimes, flutes, and banjos.
Their muse never leads them into the silly sound of worlds with gnomes or dragons or any of that kind of absurd "psych"-hippie vibe that others have ruined.
I've never suggested a band go all-instrumental, but Pothole Skinny probably would be better served in considering the change.

It's not accurate to characterize the entire roster as acid folksters, but I do think of Perhapstransparent Records as an extension of the long tradition of Jersey electric and eclectic folk rock: the sound of the machine in the garden.
Beyond albums by Pothole Skinny and Your Team Ring, Perhapstransparent has recently released the vinyl version of P.G. Six's The Well Of Memory, the self-titled album from the experimental rock band Flaming Fire, and the first CD from American Watercolor Movement.
Connolly has been pals with the Watercolor Movement musicians for years: he roomed with John Fesken and Jason Cieradkowski when he first arrived in Jersey City, and their living room was for many years a de facto recording studio.

Stephen Connolly, for all intents and purposes the entirety of Pothole Skinny, plays off-kilter minimalist folk-based compositions layered with an assortment of instruments and electronics, much in the same manner as Microphones genius Phil Elvrum.
Connolly is no Elvrum, but that doesn't keep Lullaby from being an entertaining piece of artier-than-thou mechanics.
