Potohar Plateau, spread over 2.2 million hectares in Punjab, is the main focus of these dams as the measures for increasing agricultural output in rain-fed areas was initiated in early 1960s in Rawalpindi division.
The SDO, which is a subordinate institution of Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority (PIDA), is responsible for identifying potential dam sites, collecting hydrological, hydraulic, geo-technical and other data, conducting feasibility studies, preparing detailed designs and constructing small dams and allied irrigation network.
Punjab government has envisaged construction of 60 new mini dams, 100 link mini dams and 200 village reservoirs in the Potohar region in the next 10 years and the latest proposal may be considered as a first step in this direction.

According to the details, the single Bench of LHC comprising Mr Justice Muhammad Akhtar Shabbir Thursday announced the division of city null and void while accepting similar writ petitions for regular hearing with the direction to the Secretary Local Government Punjab to address the grievances of the petitioners.
In the writ petition, it was argued that the inclusion of the Union Councils (UCs) No. 1, 2, 36 and 46 in the Potohar Town was illegal as these UCs were adjacent and contiguous to the UCs of Rawal Town but the same had been included in Potohar Town.
According to the new plan, Iqbal Road was made the dividing line between the Rawal and Potohar Towns and UCs No. 1, 2, 36 and 46 of city were included in Potohar Town mostly comprising rural union councils while the rest of the city areas comprising 42 union councils were included in Rawal Town.

After hearing both sides, seeing the maps and going through the record, the judge observed that Rawalpindi tehsil’s bifurcation was clearly an unnatural division, with newly constituted Potohar Town comprising three parts that were not contiguous with each other.
However, four UCs 1, 2, 36 and 46 that are contiguous with each other and rest of the Rawal Town were illegally made part of Potohar Town to politically benefit a certain group though a wide area of cantonment separated these UCs from Potohar Town.
