(1742-1786), American general, son of a Quaker farmer and smith, was born at Potowomut, in the township of Warwick, Rhode Island, on the 7th of August (not, as has been stated, 6th of June) 1742.
In 1775, in command of the contingent raised by Rhode Island, he joined the American forces at Cambridge, and on the 22nd of June was appointed a brigadier by Congress.
His statue, with that of Roger Williams, represents the state of Rhode Island in the National Hall of Statuary in the Capitol at Washington; in the same city there is a bronze equestrian statue of him by H. Brown.

Nathanael Greene was born on August 7, 1742, in Potowomut, Rhode Island.
Later, while on visit in Rhode Island, Greene missed the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, and by the March of 1776, Boston had been evacuated.
From the affairs of the scoundrel Banks, Greene was eventually exonerated, but he was left with no property in Rhode Island, leading to his final establishment at Mulberry Grove, an estate outside Savannah in the autumn of 1785.
