William Goddard (1825-1907), tenth chancellor of the University, was born at Potowomut Neck in Warwick on Christmas Day in 1825, the son of William Giles Goddard and Charlotte Rhoda Ives.
After graduation from Brown University in 1846, he went to Europe, and during the Revolution of 1848 he carried secret dispatches from Paris to Rome.

In the 1680's, the first white settlers encroached upon the Indian lands of Potowomut when James Greene built at the head of the tidal river which became known as Greene's River.
Today, Goddard Park offers to the public by reservations only, 395 picnic tables, 72 fireplaces and 11 game fields and of course, a beach front of about one-half mile long.

Waynesburg, the county seat, named for Major General Anthony Wayne, was laid out in 1796, and incorporated as a borough on January 29, 1816.
Potowomut, in the township of Warwick, Rhode Island, on August 7 (not, as has been stated, June 6), 1742 (N.S.).
Though his father's sect discouraged "literary accomplishments," he acquired a large amount of general information, and made a special study of mathematics, history and law.

In 1907 the Chapter acquired land on Forge Road on the river in Potowomut near the historic Forge Farm, General Greene's birthplace.

The School Committee told the City Council last night that it might have to shutter the Potowomut School, a threat that sent parents dashing to the microphone to defend the 76-year-old facility.
Avedisian contended that the school board hatched the Potowomut closure plan to galvanize parents of the elementary school's 200 students.
The proposal to close Potowomut -- and likely disperse its students to the Cedar Hill and Harold J. Scott Elementary Schools -- also sparked criticism of the Warwick Teachers Union, which has been locked in a contract dispute with the school board for nearly two years.

Quahogs will be transplanted from outer Greenwich Cove to the High Banks Management Area, Potowomut Management Area and the Potowomut Spawner Sanctuary Wednesday, May 10; and from inner Greenwich Cove to the High Banks Management Area, Potowomut Management Area and Potowomut Spawner Sanctuary Wednesday, May 17.
Adult quahogs from past shellfish transplants have spawned, and the resultant sets of juvenile clams have helped to replenish depleted areas of the bay and provide a bountiful winter fishery.

Running along the Rocky Hill School campus, the Potowomut River connects the Hunt River drainage system with the Bay.
Estuaries are zones where salt water meets fresh, and with this in mind, the 7th grade will conduct a chemical survey of the river, from its mouth to the waterfall at Forge Road.
The 7th grade week will also include a canoe trip down the Narrows River in Narragansett, Project Adventure style games and initiatives, and an overnight camp-out on the beach.

Adult quahogs will be harvested from Apponaug Cove, and transplanted into the High Banks Management Area, Potowomut Management Area, and Potowomut Spawner Sanctuary on Wednesday, May 4.
Depending on the number of East Bay participating shellfishermen and transport vessel availability, quahogs will also be moved to the Bristol Management Area on May 23.
