The Village of Potsdam is the locale of Clarkson University and State University of New York at Potsdam.
In the village the population was spread out with 11.3% under the age of 18, 56.2% from 18 to 24, 14.1% from 25 to 44, 9.4% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older.

The Village of Norwood is on the town line of two towns so that it is partly in the Town of Potsdam and partly in the Town of Norfolk.
Villagers later wanted to further distinguish the town by disassociating its name with Potsdam and submitted proposal to the federal government to become the Village of Baldwin but it was discovered that there was already a post office named Baldwin.
In the village the population was spread out with 23.4% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 25.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older.

The earliest history of Potsdam unfolded shortly after the American Revolution when the St. Regis Indians blazed the first known trails along the banks of the Raquette River and built hunting camps at the site of the present village.
Clarkson University was founded in 1896 as a memorial to the efforts of Potsdam sandstoner Thomas S. Clarkson III and his principles of developing the Potsdam community and assisting in the education and employment of its citizens.
Potsdam is also known as the "Car Capital of the North Country," currently the headquarters for eight new-car franchises and more than a dozen used-car dealerships.

In 1810, according to the census, the town of Potsdam had a population of 928, making it the third largest township in St. Lawrence county.
It was the first finished church in Potsdam and most people from then on referred to it simply as the "white church." The "white church" was used until 1853, when it was taken down and a brick church was erected on the same site.
This large new church, constructed of Potsdam sandstone, was finished in March 1872 and dedicated on June 5, 1872.
