Their revelations that the track at the crash scene, and elsewhere, had been known to be defective sent shudders through the travelling public, and a massive exercise was undertaken to bring the whole line, and the rest of the country, up to expected standards.
Potential passengers have had their confidence shaken in the wake of the Potters Bar incident, and are wondering whether the promised improvements and retrospective repair work has been implemented as well as it could have been, or whether the infrastructure has once again been allowed to fall into a state of dangerous disrepair.
The destruction at Potters Bar station, and the nearby railway bridge, will need to be cleared away, and structural repairs must be undertaken before the line is allowed to fully open again.

The Potters Bar rail crash occurred on May 10, 2002 at Potters Bar, in Hertfordshire just north of Greater London, when a northbound train derailed at high speed, killing seven and seriously injuring another eleven.
Furthermore, the HSE report found that other sets of points in the Potters Bar area showed similar (but not as serious) maintenance deficiencies, and the poor state of maintenance "probably arose from a failure to understand fully the design and safety requirements".
The writer Nina Bawden was badly injured in the crash, and her husband was killed.

St John Ambulance - Potters Bar Division has just launched a project to raise £200,000 to rebuilding the headquarters in The Walk, Potters Bar.
During the launch speak Mr Richard Walduck reminded those gathered that it was a member of this Division who was the first person to offer aid to those injured in the Potter Bar train derailment of May 2002.
Once completed the new building will allow the members to be taught in a new state of the art training centre as well as giving greater opportunities for the organisation to teach local people the live saving skills of First Aid.
