Stewart Island, or Rakiura, is one of New Zealand's special places - an island whose remote atmosphere and character is cherished by many people worldwide.
In 2002 most of the Island was gazetted as New Zealand's fourteenth national park and Rakiura - The Wilderness of Stewart Island celebrates all of its remarkable beauty with a stunning collection of photography by Rob Brown.
These range from the windswept granite peaks and outcrops around the southern harbour of Port Pegasus, the huge sweep of sand dunes behind Mason bay, the cliffs and islands around its rugged, weather-beaten coastline, and the primeval podocarp forest and windswept manuka, and the abundant widelife including species such as great spotted kiwi and kapako.

Foulness is England's fourth largest island, but for much of its modern life has been out of bounds to the public because the Ministry of Defence chose it as a testing ground for munitions.
The island is remote, isolated, bleak in winter and refreshingly cool on the hottest of summer days.
The size of Foulness Island is approximately 6,310 acres and the landscape is typically Essex coastal marsh, flat with occasional scrub and low growing trees.

Walk #279: Little Wakering to Chalkwell via Southend-on-Sea
Doing this makes the time pass more quickly than a more interesting walk where I savour every moment, but even so that part of the walk did not go fast enough, and I was very thankful when the route along the riverbanks ended for the day and I had joined the road.
The grass on the other side of the gate was well trodden, so I can only assume that they lock the gates whenever firing is occurring and that it is open at all other times.
The path continues beside the creek as it heads eastwards before turning northeastwards to Fleet Head and then going in a large loop northwards, squeezed between Barling Marsh and Potton Island, before reaching the bridge that leads to Potton Island.

Note that you don't necessarily need to go through Potton Bridge to use the Havengore route between the Roach and the sea but you do need to go through Potton Bridge (and not Havengore) if you want to circumnavigate Potton Island in a boat with fixed mast.
A wayfarer with lowered mast will easily pass under Potton Bridge even when it is in the 'closed' state but it is questionable whether it could pass under Havengore bridge when this is closed.
Maybe with careful timing it would be possible for a small boat with minimal 'air draft' to squeeze under the bridge then cross the shallows on the other side but I am not sure about this, never having tried it.
