  Powelton Village
Perhaps the first use of the title ''Powelton Village" came in the late 1930's when one Max Pfeiffer applied it to a group of houses he owned on 32nd Street.
Powelton was the site of a great Whig celebration for some important political victory in April 1834 Says one account "A committee of one hundred was appointed to make the necessary preparation.
The block from Powelton Avenue to Race Street west of 32nd Street on which stood the mansion house (for a short while 32nd Street had been known as Mansion Street) was sold to E. Spencer Miller who resided there until 1883.

Powelton Village, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Powelton Village is a neighborhood of mostly Victorian, mostly twin homes in the West Philadelphia section of the United States city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Powelton's luster began to wane by the 1920s, and by the 1940s the neighborhood was populated by low income families and infested with "bottom" gangs, so called because members lived in the "Bottom," a stretch paralleling Market St. to the south of the Village.
Powelton Village was home to the organization known as MOVE during the 1970s until neighbors complained of their uncleanly habits.

That began with E. Spencer Miller's purchase of Powelton and subdivision of it into two groups of buildings: a row of elaborate Queen Anne houses by G. and W. Hewitt for Henry Gibson (1882); and to the rear, small suburban doubles, probably by the same architects that Gibson had used.
Later apartment houses were erected at 35th and Powelton (demolished) and at 36th and Powelton in a Neo-Regency style (J. Clark, 1925); and at 36th and Spring Garden (J. Fieldstein, 1920).
Finally, though Powelton is primarily residential with a sprinkling of institutions, it was made to be self-contained by its own neighborhood commercial strip along Lancaster Avenue.
