Math Forum: Ask Dr. Math FAQ: Number Bases
From binary to octal, base 4 to base 16
Base 2 and base 16 are heavily used in computers, but base ten (decimal) is so heavily entrenched that the only other example I can think of where another base is commonly used is in old-style counting: dozen = 12, gross = 144 = 12*12, great gross = 1768 = 12*12*12.
Base four works the same way but we only have four symbols (0,1,2,3) for counting and each place is four times greater than the one to its right.

Sega Mega Drive/Sega Genesis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hoping to dramatically increase their share, Sega set about creating a new machine that would be at least as powerful as the then most impressive hardware on the market - the 16-bit Commodore Amiga and the Atari ST home computers.
In an attempt to build themselves a significant consumer base, Sega decided to focus on slightly older buyers, especially young men in their late teens and early 20s who would have more disposable income and who were anxious for more "grown-up" titles with more mature content and/or more in-depth game play.
By 1994, Sega's market share had dropped from 65% to 35%, and the official announcements of newer, more powerful consoles, such as the Saturn, Playstation, and N64 signaled that the 16-bit era was drawing to a close.

GameSpot Presents: The History of Compatibility
When the Power Base Converter was inserted into the cartridge slot of the Genesis, it essentially turned off the 68000 and forced the Z80 to become the main CPU.
Surprisingly, the Power Base Converter is not compatible with the Genesis 2 nor Genesis 3, both of which are newer and smaller versions of the Genesis.
A Power Base Converter for the Genesis 2 was manufactured, but it was sold only in Europe, presumably because the SMS's popularity lasted a bit longer in Europe than it did in the United States.

Power Strike was released in other countries with color packaging, and without any sort of "limited edition" monikor attached.
It's been proven by using a Power Base Converter/MegaDrive combination, though I haven't had anyone actually hack their SMS and find or create a language switch (seems to be viable though, as shown by an accident that occurred).
Power Strike (promoted by Sega in the U.S. as a limited edition) has been seen packaged in fl and white, and color (which could be Power Strike 2, or a foreign release).

The ATX specification is a public specification intended for widespread use in many types of systems, and it has been written as a specification for the PC industry, designed to add value to the PC.
By using a power supply that is specially optimized for ATX, it is possible to reduce cooling costs and lower acoustical noise.
An ATX power supply, which has a side venting, allows direct cooling of the processor and add-in cards, making a secondary fan or active heatsink unnecessary in most system applications.

While using the same voltage os the II or III, the power connector for the I is slightly smaller than its successors.
The best way (honestly) is to power it up and see what the first thing that pops on screen is. If there is no message about the software being licensed by Sega, it's the first version.

In addition, Sega's Power Base Converter used to play Sega Master System games was also incompatible with the device, although the peripheral had long been retired from the company's lineup.
Players were also warned not to use the AC adapter from either the Sega CD or the original Genesis (Model MK-1610), meaning an additional purchase was necessary for owners of these two units.

The system was internally compatible with the Sega Master System and a converter was available, called the Power Base Converter.

 GameSpot Presents: Features Template
It was the first machine to boast backward compatibility (in the Genesis' case with its predecessor, the Master System), too, which was made possible through the Power Base Converter, which was released at the same time as the system.
The system boasted a 7.6MHz processor (more than twice that of the Master System), a color palette of 512, audio ability that was superior to other consoles of the time, and, perhaps most importantly, a 16-bit CPU - twice that of the Master System and NES.
The Genesis' already well-established user base gave Nintendo a hard time when it tried to gain customers upon release of the SNES, and Sega's machine outsold Nintendo's for some time.
